Re: Amazon Instant Video won't work in Linux Mint 17

This solution worked in Firefox after I switched the player default in Amazon under Instant Video Settings to play in Silverlight instead of Flash. For others reading this thread, the default is Silverlight, so you shouldn't have to change it unless you had previously changed it to Flash. I have not...

Amazon Instant Video won't work in Linux Mint 17 - RESOLVED

I have two laptops (Lenovo E430 and HP Pavilion 17-e016dx). Both have Linux Mint 17 (not 17.1). Neither will run Amazon Prime Instant Videos. I've tried Firefox, Chrome, and Chromium. I've tried changing the Amazon Instant Video player to Flash from Silverlight. I tried installing a plugin of some k...

Installing Windows 8.1 to dual boot with Linux

I want to install windows 8.1 preview ISO to dual boot with my existing Linux Mint 14. I've installed Linux to dual boot with windows, but I've never done it the other way. That is, installing Windows to dual boot on a Linux computer. I have the Windows 8.1 preview ISO downloaded. I haven't tried it...

Re: Windows 8 vs Mint 15

I also really hated Windows 8 and switched over to Linux Mint about a year ago. As a new user, check out the thread "What are your top tips for a newbie." Lots of great info there. Here are my tips. Note that other users have disagreed with my cloud storage comment, saying that cloud stora...

Re: Low disk space warning

I think I found a fix for this, but since I'm not sure what happened, I'm not changing it to SOLVED. I have dropbox on this laptop and the hidden extra files appeared to be in the dropbox folder, although they were not visible with any settings. I completely deleted dropbox, its linked folders, and ...

Re: How to add a launcher for terminal on desktop?

In Linux Mint 15 and maybe 14, click Menu, then click Accessories, right click Terminal, click Add to Desktop.

You also save yourself a step when you have a program open by simply adding it to the panel. Use above instructions, but after right clicking on Terminal, click Add to Panel.

Low disk space warning

I'm getting a "Low Disk Space" popup warning that says I have less than a half GB left, but something's wrong. I have a 60GB hard drive. It has a 55GB partition and a 1.5GB swap partition... no other OS is on the machine. I'm running Linux Mint 14. The disk usage analyzer says that I'm usi...

Safest way to install Mint 15

I bought an old Dell Optiplex 745 with a D-mod PATA hard drive. It's thinner and has different connections than the standard 3.5 inch hard drive. Anyway, it had Windows XP on it and it appeared to be working fine. I booted from DVD to install Linux Mint 15 32 bit... and it got as far as the Linux Mi...

Re: Laptop overheating

It's still bothersome on idle, but the temp is definitely hotter when running an audio book for hours on end. I've taken apart the Lenovo x60s and blown it out. It was pretty clean to start with. I haven't taken apart the Toshiba, other than to replace the hard drive, but all the vents look clean. I...

Re: OH DEAR GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE - Deleting Linux Mint Hele

As another newbie, let me make a suggestion. Replace your computer with a newer, used computer. You should be able to buy a 6-8 year old dual core laptop/desktop off Craigslist for $75 or even less. In Nashville, we have 2-3 computer recyclers who buy old laptops from businesses and recycle the part...

(SOLVED) Fonts invisible in Terminal... Mint 15RC

I found my first problem with Linux Mint 15RC. I opened terminal. I type a command, but I can't see any letters. I press enter and it appears that it runs the command because the Terminal window scrolls down the amount it would when I run the xev command. The font must be black and against the termi...

Re: How to install open office?

Forgive me, I'm a newbie as well, but it occurs to me that maybe you're approaching this the wrong way. Libre Office is as good or better than Open Office. As I understand, it's a newer version of Open Office. It's already included when you install Linux Mint 14 or 15RC, as well as the more recent v...

How to go from Linux Mint 15 RC to 15?

Silly newbie question here... I've installed Linux Mint 15 RC on one of my laptops. How do I update it to Linux Mint 15 when 15 comes out? I don't have to reinstall the entire OS, do I?

Re: 11-13" Hassle Free Mint Machine

I was considering a Samsung or Acer Chromebook for Linux Mint, If you search for Chromebook and Linux Mint or Ubuntu, you can find information from others who have done this. I was searching for a Chromebook until I stumbled on a recycled Lenovo x60s, so I bought it instead.

Re: Microsoft is Doomed

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 on a laptop I bought only one month before Windows 8 came out. I had problems getting some things to work, but mostly it was just a hassle to do anything in Windows 8. Actions that took 4-6 mouse movements/clicks now took 6-8 clicks. Some of the motions, like g...
