Re: Are different kernels offered for different hardware?

Ignore the remove the kernel question. I have two Linux OS's installed. I forgot that I have to go into the other OS and update grub there for the entries in the Linux Mint grub to go away. In other words the GRUB in the other OS controls everything. All is good now.

Re: Are different kernels offered for different hardware?

Actually removing it caused a problem. How do I remove it from the GRUB menu?

Re: Are different kernels offered for different hardware?

[SOLVED} Thanks @gm10. Well the fact that it was revoked would explain it. I updated the Lenovo computer way before I attempted it on the HP computer, so that makes sense. The result of apt list -a linux-generic is the same for both devices: linux-generic/xenial-updates,xenial-security 4.4.0.130.136...

Re: Are different kernels offered for different hardware?

Yes, the first thing I did was to check the settings. I went through every single setting and they are exactly the same; even the software sources are the same. I could always manually install it, as I have an image backup in the event that things go wrong.

[SOLVED} Are different kernels offered for different hardware?

I don't know if I just never noticed this before or something is wrong. I have two different laptops with the exact same Mint 18.3 install, different brands and models of laptops. Whether I am using the GUI Update Manager or apt-get from the command line, when I do an update, different kernel versio...

SOLVED. We all do something stupid, this was my day. I am working and booting multiple laptops and OS's and I was on the wrong computer (OS). Sorry about that.

Re: Is there a way NOT to update to Lnux Mint 19?

Well, for one thing I am still seeing the the 3.10.0 series of kernel in the list. As I recall, Linux Mint 19 has the 4.15 kernel series, so I imagine that indicates that these are not Mint 19 files. Also, yes, I do know that you specifically have to run a command to do a major update, it is just th...

Re: Is there a way NOT to update to Lnux Mint 19?

Why is there 107 updates today then? I was completely up to date as of yesterday. Are these some kind of updates in preparation for Mint 19? Now that I think back, there was an "apt" update with just a couple updates earlier this morning, so maybe that is the reason; maybe that fixed something with ...

SOLVED (IGNORE): Is there a way NOT to update to Linux Mint 19?

What I mean is that I never upgrade any OS to a major release for a couple of months until things stabilize. I would like to stay on Mint 18.3 and get its updates, but when I booted in today and ran the menu's System Tools > Software Update, it listed 107 updates (I keep up with updates, so this is ...

Re: Installing Linux Mint 19 off of a USB stick

I use YUMI for all my bootable USB needs. I currently have around 10 to 15 different Linux distros and Linux/Windows diagnostic tools on a single USB stick. I have one stick that is BIOS bootable for older computers and another that is UEFI bootable for newer computers. I haven't added Linux Mint 19...

Re: How do I find a "stop job"?

SOLVED: @Flemur. Thanks, it looks like that put me on the right track, as I am using PIA (Private Internet Access) VPN service and I see in that thread you posted that it is causing the stop job problem for another user. Going to the PIA forums, I see other users with the problem and exiting PIA bef...

[SOLVED]: How do I find a "stop job"?

Both my Linux 18.3 computers take forever to shut down, and pause at the following command. I gather that some program is taking forever to quit; How do I find out what the "stop job" actually is? Here is the line it pauses at: A stop job is running for Session c2 of user <removed> (40s/1min30s)

Re: Not another Mint anti virus question.

I am also using Sophos antivirus. Even if I were naive enough to think that Linux could never get a virus in the future, there is also the possibility of transferring a Windows virus via a USB flash drive.

Correct. Started with 18.2, then moved to 18.3 on two different laptops. I have been running LMDE, since it was introduced, on my desktop. Thanks for all the info everyone.

Yes LMDE2. I figured there was some kind of architectural difference between the two.

Can I Get Login Window Themes For Linux Mint Like Those On LMDE

When I go to Settings > Login Window, on Linux Mint Debian (LMDE), there are many great fancy themes, some even animated, but on Linux Mint there is just a couple of Mint-X and Mint-Y themes. In particular I would like for my Linux Mint computers to use the SpaceRace theme by Sam Riggs that I use on...

Re: Any thinkpad users here? I have a 2008 Thinkpad T500 and it still runs Linux Mint very well.

What about newer Lenovo Thinkpads or other models? Didn't Linux had some installing on some of Lenovo's notebooks and PCs? I am running Linux Mint 18.3 64 bit Cinnamon on the second hard drive of a T470, which is the latest model (at least for a little while, with the T480 being released very soon)...

Re: 1 year anniversary of HP Stream x360 11 Installation Serena 18.1

I am also having the same good experience running Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64 bit on a very similar laptop (HP Stream 11, Model 11-r010nr, 32GB storage, 2GB ram, N3050 Celeron cpu @ 1.60 GHz). I didn't have the overheating problems you had, but Videos were freezing, the cpu very often was at 100%, a...

Re: Do Lenovo ThinkPads run well with Linux Mint?

Thinkpads have a long history of supporting Linux. Currently I have a T470 running Linux Mint 18.3 and Centos 7.4, both certified to run on the T470 (Actually Ubuntu 16.04 and Centos 7.3 are certified, so pretty much the same thing). That doesn't mean that newer or other distros won't work, but I do...
