Re: Problem installing 21.1
I recently had a similar problem with a HD. I'd somehow messed up the (big) boot partition on it. Instead of a Grub menu I got the 'blinking cursor'. Boot Repair's text report told me (right at the top) that Grub was found in the MBR but then found no data in the expected sector on that drive. I use...

Re: Upgrade to 21 from 20.3 results in black screen
I was just reading the 20.3->21 upgrade info this morning. Excellent guide. It's crystal clear that it is a *difficult* upgrade, and might not succeed. I can't even imagine trying it without following the instructions... let alone on 11-year-old hardware. I have a leftover 20.3 on a spare partition;...

Been a Mint XFCE user since 12. Just upped to 21.1 yesterday, and it is a real beauty. Gobsmacked. You guys have outdone yourselves, thanks so much.

Re: bad sound or no sound after recent alsa and pulseaudio update
In case it helps: I'm using an up-to-date LM 19.3 on AMD Ryzen hardware (driver: snd_hda_intel) A couple of days ago, I added kernel v. 5.4.0-65. Today (after using another OS), I couldn't consistently get audio via pulseaudio/pulseeffects to work. Settings in pavucontrol all checked. After a couple...

Re: Linux Mint 20.1 “Ulyssa” Xfce – BETA Release
Thank for this. I had the problem when booting normally using a 1600x1200 screen. Now it is fixed. Cpu AMD 2400G. Glad to hear it. The Xubuntu guys - way last April - claimed that AMD sent a wrong setting. A LOT of users (incl. Xubuntu) have had to struggle finding a solution. While I'm here: somet...

Re: Linux Mint 20.1 “Ulyssa” Xfce – BETA Release
20.1 users of AMD hardware may experience a problem with 'staircase graphics' when trying to switch display resolution to another size. (I already had this problem with LM 19.3 and Xubuntu 20.4 .) I had the same problem today with 20.1 while trying to switch from 1920x to 1680x. Same solution has wo...

Re: Cannot resume / wake up from suspend...
Mine wakes from suspend (invoked by panel button) OK - but it's often messy ... getting another logout dialog box for example, or having wireless and/or networking be greyed out ... sometimes even needing reboot. I've had smoother results with letting the Power Manager setting do the suspend ("...

Re: Google Earth - Installled but cannot find!
Just installed it two days ago on LM16 XFCE (32-bit Intel). Seemed to work fine.
Got it here: http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html
It sent me this file: googleearth_6.0.3.2197+1.0-1_i386.deb.

Re: [SOLVED] How to enable login without a password
I was just wondering about that the other day, and so decided to give it a shot after reading these posts. (I'm running 16 XFCE. 32-bit. 3.11.0-15-generic.) After creating nopasswdlogin with "sudo addgroup --system nopasswdlogin" (see msgs above), I still had no U&G option in settings,...

Re: [URGENT] Can't boot after running Bleachbit
Bleachbit comes as two "apps". The one called "Bleachbit (as root)" has superpowers ... like anything "root", best to avoid that without fully grokking what will happen. The other will scream "Permission denied!" in red if you attempt to violate teh sacred.

Re: GRUB behaviour with parallel Linux Mint installations
You can quickly change which of the GRUB menu line numbers is used by default by editing file /etc/default/grub . This line: GRUB_DEFAULT=0 chooses the first line# (0). Change to the line# of your target distro. Be sure to do sudo update-grub after saving. Check out this tutorial: http://help.ubuntu...

Re: mint 16 xfce can't go back to windows 7 & 8
Hi, Understand your frustration. It's not this hard most of the time. 1) For newcomers installing an .ISO to a USB IS difficult, and the usual installers (no matter how often recommended) often don't work with different hardware. (I had NO LUCK with unetbootin.) Also: FORGET virtual machine for now....

Re: Linux Mint Xfce 16
Can somebody tell me if ... it's better to wait for LM 16 XFCE edition ISO ? I've tried both lately, and I'd consider doing it the other way. Compared to Cinnamon 16, Xfce 16 is more stable - I found several problems with the Cinnamon FINAL interface and only one (screensavers) with Xfce RC. Seems ...

Re: How to install themes in linux mint 14 xfce?
Thought I'd drop in here to recommend this single-GUI, previewing, drag-n-drop-install (tar.gz) theme manager: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/06/xfce-theme-manager-single-gui-to-change.html It worked great for me (Xfce 14 Nadio 4.10.0). When you're done there, you can find more themes than you'll ever ...

Re: GRUB rescue prompt - live USB boots to black screen
Since I was playing with a bunch of distros recently, and frequently running into problems at GRUB time, I burned the "Boot-Repair" ISO to CD, and it's been very helpful on a couple of different machines. (Did NOT try it with USB yet.) Not always making the cleanest menu (depending how man...

Re: System Upgrade?
I just tried Mintbackup today (restoring the home folder, not the software) on a LM13KDE re-install and it works fairly well. Carefully deleted a partition and installed in a smaller one. After installing and rebooting: Multiple configs not in the home folder had to be redone ... system font-sizes r...

Mixing distro's is bound to not come out well.
I'm not so sure that, once you install a desktop environment, there's a simple "magic wand" you can wave to completely uninstall it. If someone knows the certain answer to that, I'd appreciate knowing it.

Re: I start linux mint and only the background is showing.
Now and then Linux throws you a curve to see if you remember what you learned. E.g. a while ago I was playing with window managers. Then, a few days later, I installed 14 Xfce, everything was fine - but I hadn't rebooted. It starts up okay ... but all of the boxen are piling up in the upper left cor...
