Re: Incorrect RAM, about half installed

After doing a bit of reading in a Lenovo forum I came across a post stating: Devices like the network controller(s), audio hardware, but especially iGPUs reserve their own "dedicated" memory which is just being used for these devices, unlike the rest of the memory which is freely available...

Incorrect RAM, about half installed

Hello, I have a Lenovo Ideapad 320 laptop running both Windows 10 and Linux Mint 20 MATE. The laptop is equipped with 8GB RAM, and this shows up correctly in the BIOS screen. However when running Mint 20 the System Monitor indicates only 3.7GB RAM. I will also note that when booted into Windows 10 t...

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 320 display issues

UPDATE: There was an update for the Kernel, which did not solve the problem. However, I might have sorted it out. I changed the Window Manager from "Marco+Compositing" to "Metacity+Compositing" and seem to be okay now. The inxi output now has this: amelia@amelia-Lenovo-ideapad-32...

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 320 display issues

I'll download Mint again and make a new USB stick, and try it. Actually, I suspect that if the live session works, the installed version will as well. My live session (before installing) required compatibility mode.

I'll report back later. Thanks All.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 320 display issues

I tried booting again from the USB stick, and also have the scrambled screen, so I re-booted using "compatibility node" and that works, and is how I'm using the laptop at this moment. Running the inxi code, this is the output: mint@mint:~$ inxi -Fxxxrz System: Kernel: 5.4.0-26-generic x86_...

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 320 display issues

Hi SMG. You asked Did you have Secure Boot off/disabled when booting Mint? Mint was installed with Secure Boot enabled. There was even a need to create a password so proprietary drivers could be installed with Secure Boot enabled. Also, I recall that when booting Mint from my USB stick, I think I di...

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 320 display issues

Awesome to get such detailed feedback, and so fast. I truly appreciate it. Before posting I had searched the forum and elsewhere for info on this problem. At one point I read something about the "compositor" being at fault, and the using something other than "marco" was a way aro...

[SOLVED] Lenovo Ideapad 320 display issues

Hello, In the process of setting up a Lenovo laptop (Ideapad 320) with the AMD A-12 CPU. I have installed Linux Mint 20 MATE alongside Windows 10, but have some display problems with the Linux Mint. The installation went well, no problems with that process. Once installation completed I had the norm...

is it possible to check safety of software from outside the repository

Hello, Regarding maintaining a secure system, I have read that with Linux one should avoid installing software that is not from the repository. My question then is what if you have software you would like to use on your Linux Mint machine, for example AnyDesk. Is there a way to assure the software y...

Backup with compression

Hello, My question is in regards to backup software to make daily backups to an external hard drive. In the past I've used LuckyBackup (which I think is just a GUI for Rsync). I'm wondering if there are better alternatives, and what other Mint users are doing for backups? There are no complaints abo...

[SOLVED] "System Monitor" shows 8 cores instead of 4

Hello, This isn't a problem, but simply a question I would like to have clarified. I just setup a new HP laptop as a dual-boot with Windows 10 and Mint. The laptop has an Intel Core i5 8th. Gen processor. This is a four core CPU. With Mint 19.1 up and running I took a look at the System Monitor prog...

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 320 WiFi stops working

It appears this has not corrected the problem. While using the computer I go from excellent performance, to apparently no WiFi connection. During this time the WiFi tray icon shows as if connected.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 320 WiFi stops working

Hi Jeremy, Thanks for the support. Can you explain what this will change on the system? I have run the code you suggested, and notice the Internet speed is, at least for now, very slow. Previously when the WiFi would be working, speeds were very good. Just curious if your suggested code would have a...

Weather Report 1.12.0

Hello, I'm running Mint 17.3 64-bit with MATE 1.12.0 My question is about an application we can add to the Panel (MATE Panel 1.12.2) I am a fan of the Weather Report App, which I have used for years. I add it to the Panel and it is always there when I start the computer. A few years ago the app woul...

Re: [SOLVED] RTL8187 WiFi stops working

To those who are looking into this problem, I have an update, the issue seems to be resolved. My apologies for this, but I had actually encountered this same issue on this very same laptop two years ago. I had forgotten about it, but it seemed familiar. I looked at another subject I posted and found...
