Re: Mint 19.1 MATE installation fails RESOLVED

I reused the DVD with 18.1 on it, and that installed just fine. My wife gets a computer she can use, and I get to do other stuff.

Thanks

Re: Mint 19.1 MATE installation fails

I'm not trying to install alongside Windows. I am trying to put only Mint on the machine, and I told the installer to erase everything, which it apparently did. Attempting to boot without the thumb drive inserted goes to a screen that gives me (ironically?) a grub > prompt. Four attempts all ended t...

Re: Mint 19.1 MATE installation fails

Further info -- it fails with the message: Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error.

After that

Mint 19.1 MATE installation fails

I bought my wife a new computer, and attempted to install Mint on it, overwriting the Windows that came on it. The installer crashes, saying it can't install grub. Three times, so far. The medium is a thumb drive, and I verified the download as the directions said. Any thoughts?

too little room in 'Boot'

When I recently rebooted after running the update program I got a message telling me I only had 22M left in "Boot'. I assume this is a problem or I wouldn't have gotten the message. But I have no idea what to do about it. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

boot partition full? <Solved>

One of my Linux Mint computers has started giving me a message every time I boot it that the boot partition is full. It suggests deleting some of what's there, but I'm leery of just going there and moving random stuff to the trash. How should I deal with this? If I don't, am I going to have problems...

computer dying - how do I backup my firefox bookmarks?

My computer has started showing signs of issues, mostly running v e r y slowly or locking up. I'm assuming these are hardware, since the machine is a few years old and has been upgraded, hardware and software a few times since. I'm running Mint 17 and MATE, and have updated, using update manager, si...

Re: trying to replace an older Fedora w/ mint FIXED!

Yup, I'm stupid. I downloaded the Mint iso, and verified it, and then somehow burned the wrong iso to the CD. With the right iso the installation seems to have gone just fine.

Thank you, and sorry for the waste of your time.

Re: trying to replace an older Fedora w/ mint

I booted again from the DVD. (The computer thinks, apparently, that I am trying to install fedora 21, which is what the install pages say.) I tried various stuff, including something that seemed to say I could delete all the partitions already on the disk, but when it finished I still had the old fe...

trying to replace an older Fedora w/ mint

I have been trying to install the new Mint & Mate on my laptop which has an older fedora distro on it. I burned the ISO to a DVD (using my desktop computer) and checked it. I put it in the laptop's drive and powered up the laptop. It appears to be booting from the DVD drive, as it is set to. It also...

Menu box black background

I recently installed Mint 17 MATE. I've got it mostly working okay now. One thing that still seems wrong is that when I open the Menu box (lower left corner of the screen) its background is black, which hides any text. The icons are still there and visible, and it all seems to work as it should, but...

Desktop shortcut to wine (Windows) program?

I've installed Mint17 MATE, and it seems to be running okay. One thing I haven't figured out is how to put a shortcut on the desktop to a program that runs under wine. I tried dragging and dropping from the .exe in the (hidden) .C folder, and tried copy and paste. Both show the icon on the desktop, ...

random crashes w/ mint17

Installed mint17. had been running 14 w/ no problems, but then vidoe stopped working. Would get a black box w/ message 'video not loaded'. Thought about trying to fox, but 17 was out and supposed to be the one to use, so I installed it. Videos now play. but now, usually when starting software, syste...
