Re: Linux Mint 21.3 “Virginia” released!

Which version of the LM21.3 ISO did you install? Installing from the Update Manager, Cinnamon 21.3 64bit. No, you are not installing. You are upgrading. The upgrade process has not yet been announced. As I have already mentioned in this topic: Moderator note: All posts referencing the upgrade proce...

Can I update the mirrors in the Software Sources whilst it's downloading or is that not a good idea?

Re: Safest way to view files over network

OK thanks everyone, I'll have a look and play with these options.

I have no real preference apart from security really, just want to make sure I'm not opening myself up to hackers.

Re: Safest way to view files over network

I'm a little confused by one aspect of your use case: Is the Mint client accessing the Ubuntu Server within your home network? Or are you accessing it from the internet? My Mint laptop is only accessing the Ubuntu server from within my network, my laptop never leaves my house. Maybe that's where I'...

Safest way to view files over network

Hi all, I have Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon (64 bit) on my laptop. I also have a mini PC acting as my mini server with Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS Gnome (64 bit). I do have SSH setup to access the server for installing things etc. The server with Ubuntu on runs Plex Media Server (the server and the data) and als...

Re: Linux mint 21.1 from v21 and now no updates? Is normal?

I've had no updates from the Linux Mint team in that period, had some flatpak updates though.

It's Christmas and New Year so I'm sure they're having a well deserved break.

Re: Blue-screen-of-death type of freeze

I did a fresh install of Linux Mint 21.0 Cinnamon and then upgraded to 21.1 through the terminal and I'm getting constant freezing and apps force closing all over the place. Currently using kernel 5.15.0-56. No drivers available from the Driver Manager. Random too, I normally use the same programmes...

Re: Ransomware - Encrypted Data

It had a static IP address and port forwarding so that I could use Plex outside of my home network and use Nextcloud as my cloud storage device. Just curious.. Did you keep your raspberry, Plex and Nextcloud servers regularly updated? Yeah, a few days before the attack I formatted my server and set...

Re: Ransomware - Encrypted Data

Checkmate attacks NAS through exposed SMB and then encrypts shared directories. The users also advised to disable the Port Forwarding of the routers and NAS and disable the UPnP function of the NAS. But that would still mean that you exposed the server to the outside world [with a static ip or simi...

Re: Ransomware - Encrypted Data

Do you know of any Linux based decryptors? I don't believe anything would decrypt it but I have nothing to as lose as I'll be formatting the drive soon. No. Fortunately I haven't had to look. But if that data meant anything to you, which it probably doesn't, you'd pull out all the stops including i...

Center New Windows

Hi all, Using Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon and this is more of a bug report (maybe) than an issue. In System Settings > Windows > Behaviour I have the "Center New Windows" option ticked so that all new windows will obviously open in the middle of the screen, and they do just that. In System Sett...

Re: Ransomware - Encrypted Data

Review your files. If it is ransomware, there should be a "ransom note" in plain sight. The name of the virus is usually there. Many security companies have released free decryptors for a variety of ransomware, so it might be worth looking. But if you don't find a ransom demand, that mean...

Re: Ransomware - Encrypted Data

Where I work, some of our customer had their systems "crypto'd". All we could really do for them is restore their backups that we take every day. Data recovery will be no simple task I'm sure. Yep, although I've always known to make backups I have been a bit slack here and the timing was ...

Re: Ransomware - Encrypted Data

1 - Is it safe to attach my external hard drive to my laptop running Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon to inspect the damage? 3 - Once formatting and reinstalling Raspbian OS and recovering (if possible) any data, I will format my external hard drive, is that enough to ensure the drive is clean? 1 - before co...

Re: Ransomware - Encrypted Data

Sorry that happened to you. I wonder what go it started. I say somebody has to click on something to get those ransomware things started. That is embarrassing, but as we say, data that is not backed up is superfluous data. 1 - Is it safe to attach my external hard drive to my laptop running Linux M...

Ransomware - Encrypted Data

Embarrassing post coming up :x Yesterday I decided to wipe my server and start from scratch, I run Raspbian OS on a Raspberry Pi 4 and use it as my server for Plex and storing my data that was accessible via Nextcloud. I installed Raspbian OS and Plex and mounted my external hard drive (EXT4 filesys...
