Have you tried executing cd as root or trying as a different user? (more to see if it's a messed up $PATH rather than permissions)

Are you simply trying to start the program using the command line? (easy, type the command to launch the player followed by space and ampersand so you can keep working from the command line without having to close the player first) If you're trying to view videos inside the terminal window, I think ...

There are voice command solutions that work well in Linux, but nothing reliable for transcription. Some have had success with Naturallyspeaking in wine. Unfortunately, with the notoriously buggy nature of Naturallyspeaking, it becomes difficult to troubleshoot a wine installation. Nuance tried to ch...

The alternative, of course, is to install an OS that loads from a compressed file system and runs in RAM, like Puppy. It's not as pretty or functional as Mint, but it would be less affected by the USB transfer speed limit.

Those numbers are not comparable between Linux and Windows. Signal to noise ratio, RSSI, etc are more meaningful, but still problematic. What matters is throughput, latency, and stability of the connection. Do large file downloads across your LAN at various times of day, alternating between Windows ...

WPA2/AES is more secure and has less overhead (loss of throughput). Avoid WEP and WPA if possible. When people say that the WRT54G series routers are compatible with Linux, they are not referring to your connected devices. They are talking about the multitude of 3rd party Linux firmware distros avai...

Ping your ISP's DNS servers or other internal servers/gateway. If low, then the problem is entirely outside your network and therefore outside your control.

Known issue with Cinnamon. Improved from previous, but apparently there are font rendering and/or other issues responsible for the delayed appearance of the desktop.

Try profile in grub for a couple of reboots. Then try bootchart and eliminate anything unnecessarily slowing things down.

Your options are to disable n and accept lower throughput with better stability, try different kernel (same kernel version that worked in other distros as long as it's newer than the one that came with Mint 16), or experiment with different driver and firmware (see the Linux wireless project).

su is great and terribly misused. "su - adminusername" or even "su -" for root user is great if you want to fix or install something without logging a user out. If you're already in the sudoer file or if it's a LiveDVD/LiveUSB then you're better off with sudo -i as recommended above.

There will be a huge responder bias in such a survey. Mint and Ubuntu work out of the box and are distros of choice for people who don't know about the survey, while Gentoo users, for example, have lots of time to do surveys while packages are compiling/"emerging". ;-) Seriously though, you Arch use...
