Re: Wireless laptop on new router

Well I've now tried all different security settings on Mint including no encryption at all and it still says "bad password" so clearly that message is wrong. Either I have missed a Mint setting somewhere or my laptop isn't working with the router for some reason. It's nothing to do with the laptop w...

Re: Wireless laptop on new router

It's a Toshiba Equium A100-147 laptop. Can't find any info about the wireless hardware inside. Don't know whether it's relevant, but a wireless client keeps appearing and disappearing in my router settings. Strangely, the wireless channel has now changed from 6 to 1 in Wicd and I can't see how to ch...

Re: Wireless laptop on new router

Well I installed wcid, and also updated the kernel to 34 as I understand there is a problem with wireless on the 32 kernel which I had but when I enter the correct WPA key for the connection it keeps coming up with "bad password". I know it's correct so there is still something wrong. Seems from rea...

Wireless laptop on new router

I changed my router from a Linksys WRT45G (g) to a D-Link DIR 615 (n) and, after changing to a new WPA code on my laptop, it connected fine on WIndows. I can't get it to connect on Mint however after changing the WPA code. There seem very few settings to change compared to WIndows and I can't see an...

Re: Laptop locking

Thanks - I will try that but it seems a very obscure procedure. I was expecting it to be in the control panel settings.

Laptop locking

I have Mint on my laptop for my son to use safely (mostly iplayer) but it keeps locking when idle and requiring my password. I turned off all the power function options which lock it and thought that would prevent it happening. What else do I need to do to stop it locking up ?

Re: Opening Firefox on startup

Just solved this myself - the only thing holding the network connection up was a password request. Making the connection automatic meant it started before the browser opened as required.

Opening Firefox on startup

I have installed Mint as default OS on my laptop for my son to use iplayer on Firefox with WOT for protection. I want Firefox to open automatically for him on the iplayer homepage but although there is an option in Mint to open Firefox at startup it's not very useful as it runs before the internet c...

Re: XBMC installation

Yes they were, and I reinstalled them again and also tried installing PK7zip as well but can't see either app in the main menus or right click menus.

Re: XBMC installation

Thanks for the answer but right clicking does not give any "extract here" option and archive manager tells me that the file type is unsupported. This is why I am a bit confused.

XBMC installation

I am trying to install XBMC in Mint but can't get past this bit:- "Adding the XBMC SVN Repo Installer In Ubuntu the SVN Repositories are not automatically added. You must add them manually. * First, download the SVN Repo Installer from: * http://xbmc-addons.googlecode.com/svn/packages/plugins/progra...

Re: Dual boot problem

I don't remember any option to install Grub I must admit. I'm afraid I'm having a lot of difficulty with this boot info script. Firefox downloads it to Downloads which appears to be in the path home/mint/Downloads according to the file browser but this is clearly not correct. I remember why I stoppe...

Re: Dual boot problem

Having tried to follow the instructions I now can't boot into my PC at all. I tried putting the Windows disk in and repairing but it will only boot into a screen with a message about Grub. I have had to put the Linux disk in to get into the PC. If I delete Linux will that allow Windows to boot again...

Re: Dual boot problem

Well I tried the instructions but got stuck. When I enter this line:-

cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg | grep Windows | cut -d'"' -f 2

I am told there is no such file or directory.

Re: Dual boot problem

Thanks - I'll try this. Wish it was a bit more straightforward, like an option during installation of Linux, for example. I don't mind which boot manager I use really but just want Windows first. "note that the 2nd line contains /dev/sda, this is not a typo." - I assume you mean "contains devsda" as...

Dual boot problem

I have just installed Mint again after a while not using it, dual booting with Windows 7. Afterwards I reinstalled the Windows MBR and now the PC only boots into Windows. I want it to dual boot with Windows as default but can't remember how to do this. I tried looking for the menu.lst in Mint but ca...

Paltalk Express

I've used this before on Linux and have just installed Mint 8, 64 bit version but when I try and use Paltalk Express now it tells me that the architecture is wrong and the OS does not support it and I need to upgrade Adobe Flash. There are several versions of the package for linux, deb, rpm, tar etc...

Re: RAM configuration

Thanks. Would that apply to Windows 7 also ? I think my hardware takes 64bit but I've always understood it was less stable and had no real benefits.
