Re: [UNRESOLVED] How partition Mint 17.1 KDE for data trans
When I install a new distro, I first copy the entire content of my home directory to my nas, Then install the new distro. After that, I run a little postinstall script that installs all software I like and that is not installed by default ( for example brother printer driver, wireshark, frostwire, ....

Re: Linux Mint 17.1 x64 battery drain
Same thing here.
When changing from mint to Kubuntu the problem remains, linux drains a lot more power from my machine than windows.
As a result, the system gets hotter also, which may affect the lifetime of my PC.
Any ideas why this is ?
I would like tux to be a little greener

Re: Not able to decrease Root installation size using GParte
Don't forget to backup files you certainly do not want to loose before changing the partition !!
If things go wrong, linux can be easily reinstalled, but your personal files will be gone forever if you don't have a backup.

Re: bitlocker - dual boot
Thx, I'll give it a try as soon as I get the bitlocker access code you need to unlock the PC when you forget the digit code needed when starting the PC.
Up to now I did not dare to boot from USB as I was affraid it would corrupt the bitlocker checksum.

bitlocker - dual boot
Hi, my work PC windows partition has recently been protected by bitlocker. This removed grub and installed a Microsoft bootloader, so I cannot boot into my linux partition anymore, I removed the linux partition. Is there a way to install Linux again on the remaining partition without changing the bi...

Or even better, Linux from scratchBy the way, should you ever get a call from any call center/scammer guys, and he asks what OS you use, tell him you use Gentoo Linux or some other hardcore *nix and record the reaction.

Re: Replace Ubuntu 14 with Mint 17
It depends what you would like to do 1. Install Linux Mint 16 alongside Ubuntu 14.04. This keeps Ubuntu and also installs mint, so you will end up with a dual boot system, and when you boot your pc you will get a menu allowing you to choose what linux system to use 2. Erase Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and rein...

Re: Mint 14 and I don't want to upgrade: will I be punished?
You definitely risk a slap on the back of your head by the linux mint gods
Seriously, I don't think there is a big risk by not upgrading.
If he was running a server, I would say it needs to be up to date all the time, but for everyday use the risk will be very limited I think.

Re: Unable to mount MP3 player - Mint 17
Can you mount it on another PC ?
Perhaps you need to change a setting on the mp3 player to put it in mpt mode
or perhaps it is defective, or the usb port is defective

Re: Files automatilly deleted from USB Stick
If you want to do a clean install, do the following: - Backup the data you want to keep on an external drive or on another pc or cloud storage - Download a new iso file (perhaps something went wrong during your previous download) - burn it to a dvd or put it on an usb stick - boot from this and do a...

Do a google search for ext4 undelete I never had to do an undelete so I don't have experience with these things, but it looks to me there are plenty of possibilities, as long as the deleted files are not overwritten by other files The first link I saw was a tool called extundelete, it is in the repo...

Re: Very new and challenged user
It seems to me that you need a tablet rather than a PC (no boot time, everything ready to use when you switch it on) If you can live with a boot time of about 15 seconds, consider putting an SSD disk in your PC. I put one in an old desktop PC, and it gave it a real speed boost (not for heavy video e...

Re: Replacing Windows 8.1 with Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon
Which "USB" should i move up in order to boot from an USB Stick? Just try which one works, it will be quicker than asking here. On top of changing to legacy mode in bios, I needed to wipe all partition info with gparted before the install could be done. The reason for this is that UEFI di...

Re: No bootloader installed? (UEFI + GPT custom partitionin
As I said before, you don't seem to use windows, so save yourself a lot of trouble and wipe the GPT partition layout with gparted and install a normal well known partition sheme. I did this to on my daughters new laptop. she hated the pre installed W8, So in Bios I switched off secure boot and uefi,...

Re: No bootloader installed? (UEFI + GPT custom partitionin
Why do you need GPT/uefi when you don't use windows 8 ?
Just partition your disk with gparted in the 'old' way, and disable uefi in the bios of the pc, it will make your life a lot easier.

Re: Installing from LiveUSB
When you boot from the live usb, just before you get to the part where it shows try or install mint, you can push an F key, for example F1. You will then see a menu. One of the menu items is for checking of the live image is ok. Did you check that ? perhaps something went wrong while downloading. An...
