Re: System Recommends Certain NVidia Driver But Won't Use It

I’m running Mate, so I guess I’ll just hold off on that driver. I suppose there will be a fix eventually, right?

System Recommends Certain NVidia Driver But Won't Use It

When I installed a new video card, NVidia GeForce GT 1030, because I finally got a PSU that could handle it, I ran the Driver Manager to get the recommended driver. It recommended the one below, and then said it couldn't use it due to unmet dependencies. I tried a search for unmet dependencies, but ...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

Well, it turns out that it WAS the PSU that was causing at least some of the problems. I put the question of it's compatibility up on the Dell Forums, and though it has plenty of wattage, in lacks: This unit does not have the required 140W- 225W combined power for the 3.3V/5V RAILS and 5VSB is less ...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

Well, I had it backwards. It's the Windows drive that is nearest to the MB. I guess I'll stick with Windows until it does the same thing the Linux Mint drive did. If it doesn't, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Either way, thanks for the suggestions.

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

Is there a way to flip flop where the Mint and Windows drives are located in the case? We wouldn't want that Windows drive to be left out of all the restart fun the Mint drive has been having. That would be easy. That's one thing I have to say about an Optiplex, is that the hardware seems fai...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

LOL!! More and more interesting. Oh, I meant it that the thread is finished, but others kept posting, so I thought I would throw in the info about Windows, but maybe I haven't hit the problem shutdowns yet. I'm beginning to suspect that the Optiplex is a piece of junk, and I was an idiot to buy one....

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

Since my last post I have disconnected the HDD that has Linux Mint installed, and reconnected the Windows 10 HDD. It's been running like a clock, and I have been searching for anything that might indicate errors. Maybe I don't know how to look on Windows (what else is new), but I've been using the c...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

I suspect it's hardware as well. My laptop doesn't seem to have any of these issues, and since I use it the most, I'll probably just shut this beast down and use only the laptop. 1000, you're right, I don't know what I'm doing. You would think after 20 years of using PCs that I would have a better h...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

1000, you seem to know what you are talking about, and I respect that. However, I don't understand what you are talking about, except when you say the OS has been damaged? If this is the case, I feel it only right to conclude that the whole install was bad, and I should just install a different OS. ...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

Those messages appear to be from around the time you installed LM20. It's all mid-July. (And I'm presuming it's the install since it shows the 5.4.0-26 kernel.) Yeah, you see, I couldn't pick that out. I simply ran several of the journalctl commands that 1000 showed me, though not all. It's really ...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

I don't mean to be confused, but I am. However, I'm making a list of the journalctl codes for use when the next shutdown/restart happens. As for the PSU. It is nearly new. It's a TS-550, NVieia SLI ready, with an 80 Plus bronze rating. I found on a Dell forum that PSUs of this power could be used as...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

I have Cinnamon and it's possible it writes more info to syslog than MATE. So I may just be expecting to see more info than what is possible. However, I would expect shutdowns to show. I just checked my syslog (I shut down every night.) and I don't see any information remotely like that in the log ...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

I'm the only user, but I did have to log in twice. However, it wasn't just a login the second time, but an actual shutdown, then restart up to the login screen, like a first startup. So you logged in the first time and never got the desktop? You got a second log in screen? And then it shut down aft...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

SMG, the computer has never shutdown when I logged in, so I'm not sure what that is. It usually takes a bit during a session on GIMP, or working on some file or folder for an extended period, when the shutdown just happens. If I haven't saved what I was working on, it's gone, and I have to start ove...

Re: System Crash, Possible Sysfs Problem?

Edited. From some time to now Debian, Ubuntu and also Linux Mint which is based on these distributions use systemd instead init. Logging tools have also changed. You should use journalctl results to journalctl -- Logs begin at Sun 2020-07-12 16:26:08 CDT, end at Fri 2020-09-25 15:26:01 CDT. -- Jul ...
