It's because WIndows 8 is set to "Fast boot". When windows shutsdown is stores some metadata on the harddrives somehow to help it boot up faster, which plays hell with linux trying to mount them. What you need to do is go into windows, control panel, power options and within the power plan...

It is a great start. Only the tweeking needed! I've managed to get it working manually using all the IP's of the devices I'm interested and have also tweeked the text show in green if up and red if down.
