Re: MD5Sum on Downloads/DVD burni

@Austin.Texas: I'm using Linux Mint 13 Maya (I always use LTS versions), and using Brasero to burn. @Mute Ant (cool name, BTW!): THANKS, I'll give it a try & let you know. @Everyone: With further research I found out that the cause of the erroneus Md5 is that it computes the sum including the re...

MD5Sum on Downloads/DVD burni

Hi! I'm trying to DL and install Mint 13 Maya. I did it a few years ago on my other computer with no problem, but seem to have lost the brain cell with the pertinent info. I downloaded it twice, both via torrent and from one of the USA mirror sites. The md5sum of both DLs is correct, however after I...

Re: Tomboy Notes How to switch "insert" and "overwrite" mod

DOH! Thanks! [sheepish look] Guess I oughta vist the outskirts of my keyboard more often... Can I use the lame excuse that I have one of those huge keyboards and a tiny desk "keyboard shelf", so that most of the time my KB is on an angle with the right end hidden under the top of the desk...

Tomboy Notes How to switch "insert" and "overwrite" modes

First, To the Mint community, THANKS for all your previous help. Y'all rock! I've got what seems like a noob question, but even a half hour of searching with Lord Google has been of no help in finding a solution, neither has the Tomboy web page or the Mint manual so I'm turning to y'all... On Tomboy...

Ubuntu/Mint Network Tools missing in Mint (solved)

Hi! I recently had to do some work on my network and noticed that my Mint (13/Maya/MATE) did not have the network tools I had used for many years (ping, traceroute, whois, etc.) with Ubuntu (which I ditched at the advent of Unity.) Searching the forums was difficult as there were too many things goin...

Re: Can I add a "shade window" button to titlebar like in XF

I'm using Mint 13 (Maya) 64-bit, with the stock version of MATE. I always use LTS versions (which is why I switched from Ubuntu when the last pre-Unity LTS version lost support) whenever possible so functionality and features are consistent for a couple of years. (Nothing aggravates me more than cha...

@Xenopeek Can I add a "shade window" button to titlebar...

Wow, It's great that not only my immediate request, but it seems others (depending on theme) are available. HOWEVER, I cannot get it to work. Preferring the command line for it's quickness and simplicity, I tried that first, but got the message: No such schema 'org.mate.Marco.general' Next, I instal...

Mint 14 / Mate 1.6 "Advanced Menu" option missing

I use Mint 13 with Mate 1.4 and couldn't be happier. My dad recently installed Mint 15 which has Mate 1.6 and when setting it up for him I noticed that under "add to panel" only the "Main Menu" ('the main mint menu') and "menu bar" ('a custom menu bar') options were ava...

Re: How to edit MENU>PLACES in main menu?? Noob question...

@xenopeek Sorry about the cliff 'o text, I should have waited to inquire until after my brain cooled off a bit.. One of the things that was confusing me in the menu>preferences was that the "custom places" was directly under the "GTK bookmarks" check box and I got them confused (...

Can I add a "shade window" button to titlebar like in XFCE?

Shading (rolling up) windows has always been one of my favorite/most useful Linux desktop perks. Don't know how I lived without it for all those Windoze years! In Mint/Mate, as in Ubuntu/Gnome 2.x i have always shaded with a double-click on the title bar (after enabling it in the preferences). Howev...

How to edit MENU>PLACES in main menu?? Noob question...

I love Mint/Mate and the great community.. Effecting most changes are very intuitive, but I'm having trouble editing/figuring out the PLACES shortcuts in the main menu. I'm using the "mintMenu/AdvancedMenu" panel menu. Oddly, it is not under EDIT>MENU, but under PREFERENCES>MENU>PLACES whe...

Re: Can Caja show folder size in Bytes?/BURNING QUESTION

Thanks for the leads, I remember Norton Commander quite fondly! OK, so there are workarounds but my burning question (after pondering the topic) is how hard would it really be to have a file manager scan the directories and have a column with their total sizes in it? If the info shows up in "pr...

Re: MATE super-noob question about version #

@ TheDynamicHamza21: Um, are you sure that's the versiion of Mate itself and not the version of Mate Panel like it is with the properties of other panels items, programs, applications and widgets that are given when selecting 'about' after a right click? It says "The Mint Panel" in the 'ab...

@gwi :
In Mint/Mate, the Menu is themed separately from the desktop in general. Right click the menu button, select preferences--> theme, and the colors can be changed, which also changes the panel button.

Re: OS Reinstallaton with (existing) separate /home partitio

All three of your questions are answered by the process by which to utilize an existing /home partition. Perform a normal install, use the same name as the existing user, but when you get to specifying the installation (side by side and the like), do it manually. Once you're assigning partitions ma...

MATE super-noob question about version #

Where can I find the version number of my installation's MATE? (Command line is fine if that'll do it). I've right-clicked and selected "about" on everything I could and cannot figure out how to find the version of MATE that I have installed. I can easily find the version of the "show...

I know the post is old and you have moved on with new hardware, but if you want to check the drive for damage you could use the self-testing built into it. Just Google SMART Hard Drive for self-test info. From Wikipedia: "S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology; often wri...

Quick laugh for Linux lovers..

I found this quote on the Interweb somewhere:

OS Reinstallaton with (existing) separate /home partition

Just a few quick noob question here... I undertsand that with a separate /home partition, a clean re-install of the OS will leave your /home partition untouched. 1- However, with that new install won't it create its own (new) /home directory in the main partition? 2-What needs to be done during the ...
