Re: Problems with mint 19.2 after installation

9-10 year old computer, original drive? Looks to me like the hard drive is failing. Can you boot to a LIVE USB installation flashdrive, and run GParted on it, use that to reformat the partition? Do you have personal data that needs protection, or is it a new install?

Re: Deliver Me From "UPSTART" HELL!

Any updated on the state of a decent systemd-free fork? 17/3/rosa expires soon, right? I don't mind a compatibility layer (e.g. using systemctl, journa, ctl, blah blah blah).. I just don't trust the full beast.. SystemD even reads your LUKS boot block-device passphrase!?! Wedgeware would be fine wit...

Who are you posting to? Me? Or brian?

I added "sudo" to those commands for scanner installs.

Re: HP all-in-one printer drivers

Is this still all about the scanner? The printer is working otherwise? Even if printer isn't working at the time, I'd add some scanner programs. sudo apt install sane sudo apt install xsane sudo apt install simple-scan The run the GUI simple scan from Menu and see if you can scan. Of course you need...

Re: HP all-in-one printer drivers

I don't have the slightest clue of what I'm supposed to be doing. Most of this is 'way over my head. If I were to start over, from where? That's the same question to myself that prompted my previous answer. I can only point you to trying the suggestions in former links of my post of how to work aro...

Re: HP all-in-one printer drivers

Do you have any comment on the current developments here? Not really. Gotten too confusing at this point. I'd start over. And here's why. Too many others having printer problems that seem related to systemd setup. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS Socket activation cups provides a org.cups....

Re: USB hub recognised but not working [SOLVED]

I repeat. Need a powered hub. Maybe you could fit something like this for an extra 1.5A of power, cheaply. Or for 2A at 5V, perhaps this one. This would be easiest for US electric sockets, plenty of USB power, for 4-5 ports. Plug to wall, use a charging cord (2 wire cord, not 4 wire data cable) from...

Re: USB hub recognised but not working

That part about the Seagate being seen, but otherwise the hub not working is certainly a conundrum. Maybe one port on the hub works and the other ports don't? However, the drive had other power, didn't it? LOL, maybe that's what powered the unpowered hub! If the hub is removed, does the port it was ...

It did? I thought it was just me, while hacking around on 18.3 yesterday.

Re: USB hub recognised but not working

Hope it's a powered hub considering what you've connected. Plug your keyboard into it instead, and remove the Seagate, see if the keyboard alone works with it?

Only 12 New Posts Right Now

I think that's the fewest new posts I've ever seen on the forums. I wonder why? Is every one doing so well, or is it because it's 2:30am here on east coast of America? Are there fewer users of Mint now, or things are going so well for the latest systems they are using? At times recently it seems the...

Re: Wanted - Old Linux Mint Ver 5

No, go to Pale Moon instead of Firefox for that old computer. Firefox changed a lot after version 57 Quantum, and you may not be able to install older themes and extensions, but Pale Moon has maintained those and there will be such available for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pale_Moon_(web_brows...

Re: Wifi often loses connection

When a wifi device causes too much trouble, rather than taking hours or days to track it down, I just toss on a USB Panda that works OOTB with Linux, and move on to happier times.

Re: System becomes unresposive when idle

I am not sure what state mine goes into but the problem is it wont wake up with out pulling the power cord Been up for 36 hours now Hmm, that sounds BIOS driven. Turn off all "Wake On" entries in your BIOS. Like WOL, or others. Maybe it's waking up, then later hitting some power off setting, which ...

It wouldn't be too bad if he just ran Firefox and Thunderbird on it Sure, as long as he doesn't actually try to load any webpages... I diligently use my hosts file to block advertisements, as many of those image loading ads as I can. Firefox also makes it easy to block images from such sites. Pages...
