Re: No sound after kernel upgrade
What is your BIOS settings for choice of either the i915 video onboard or the Nvidia added discrete card? HDMI sound is always shunted through the graphics chip, so has to be considered more from that approach sometimes. HDMI defined at wikipedia. High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a pro...

Linuxfx, Systemd, MIcrosoft, & Lennard Poettering
I'll try and find and link to my old post warning about systemd having possibility of misuse in future. Two links for you to peruse, rather than me posting a lot about them. Basically there's a new distro called linuxfx that Infinitely Galactic has concern looks too much "Microsoft". Lenna...

Re: Mint Mate Crashorama
Suggestion: run memtest (https://www.memtest86.com/) to rule out hardware issues with your memory sticks. All those software crashes smell like memory could be an issue. Let the test run all night, let it finish at least a few passes on your memory sticks. Then get rid of the Nvidia card  My o...

Re: Upgrade Mint 18.3 to Mint 21
If this is a desktop, not a laptop, I'd just unplug the current drive, install the new drive, then install the newer Mint system on it. Later you could plug back in the older drive and move what data you wanted to the new drive and system. You have to consider greatest factor between new drive cost,...

Re: Tea or Coffee?
Torani sugarless syrups, I prefer the hazelnut. Allows me to make easy cold or iced coffees. Walmart is so often out of it, I have to order online instead. I don't have to worry with the powders, which won't dissolve in cold coffee anyway.

Re: Tea or Coffee?
My breakfast each morning is a cup of milk with 2 tsp of nescafe classico, (I like it strong!) one sweet & low packet, and a dash of hazelnut flavoring (Torani brand). As for tea, I'd say Lipton has the best flavor, and mostly what my family drank, using loose leaf and then through a strainer, n...

Re: The last refuge of cruel and unusual punishment
My best dental experience was as a "guinea pig" at a Baltimore School of Dentistry. If not in a hurry to go somewhere, willing to kick back a few hours, no rush job being done, and the students do a great job of keeping you numbed up, then it's actually almost relaxing. I let them do all t...

Re: Ghosts of days gone by (Ancient Linux)
Lot of talk about Linux becoming mainstream again, due to Windows version 11. Youtube videos show many windows users are really pissed off about version 11, and the TPM requirements, and claims even certain fairly recent processors not accepted by it. Version 11 reminds me of the "Signature Edi...

If I read properly you were using Thunderbird ESR and had it report as Edge with Windows 10? Host systems don't compare the reported browser against other factors like the engine? Not Thunderbird, but Firefox ESR. I used version 84 and added the extension "User Agent Switcher & Manager&quo...

Re: Ghosts of days gone by (Ancient Linux)
I started looking at Linux around Knoppix, version 4 as I recall. "initiating startup sequence" LOL. It was fun playing around in it, but I continued with Windows 2000 Pro and XP till 2013 moving first to Kubuntu 12.04, later then to Mint 14. I had also looked early on at "Lindows-Lin...

Re: Google intents to cripple Chromium
I never use Chrome or Chromium, so I don't give a 'damn' to quote Rhett Butler in a movie a 100 years ago. As for Firefox, it is the ONLY browser that I consider worthwhile. all the others are crippled in the way they handle bookmarks/Library. I'm with you on that one, prefer Firefox ESR versions. ...

Re: 19.3 to 20 - complete failure, extremely angry
The reason you got the file split error with Fat32 is that the FAT32 system is limited to 4GB (file sizes). I've used a program to split a large file into 2 files to comply with the FAT32 limitations--I think the program was 'wodim', but that won't help your situation. That's it! Thanks. I knew tha...

Re: 19.3 to 20 - complete failure, extremely angry
I don't have UEFI BIOS to check on, so I'm wondering if the UEFI part of the BIOS is programmed for only 64 bit and maybe that's why it has to be put in Legacy Mode to boot older 32 bit systems? In a link I gave just above, I had a problem using 32 bit linux Archive Manager to extract an ISO for W10...
