Re: [Solved]'Mobile broadband', Huawei E220, EE prepaid sim

As you were. I had the wrong type of sim. I got the correct type and it worked straight away.

Re: 'Mobile broadband', Huawei E220, EE prepaid sim

The sim is from UK mobile network 'EverythingEverywhere', also called EE, who have the APN information of 'everywhere' on their web site, but you are right of course, it does seem misleading.

[Solved]'Mobile broadband', Huawei E220, EE prepaid sim

After extensive searching I'm still unable to find instructions for enabling mobile broadband using my E220. So far I've added a Mobile Broadband connection in 'Network Connections' but mobile broadband is still shown as 'not enabled' in the network popup from the right of the task bar. I'm not sure...

Re: Straying icons in the Xfce desktop

This is a common complaint with Xfce, and the only solutions I could ever find ... eg. this ... https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2232021 ... are IMO more of a PITA than the problem itself. So I just learned to live with it. Things like this are part of using fairly minimal DEs like Xfce, r...

I, too, have this issue and would appreciate a solution. (LM17.3, 32b Xfce.)

>If the documents you don't want the contractor to be able to view is in, lets say, the Documents folder, >chmod the folder 0700 in which case he/she would not even be able to get into that folder. Ah yes, the murky work of numeric permissions. Not for the lazy and hopeless like me. Even after readi...

Re: Managing groups for an added user...

Yes, setting 'others' permissions to 'none' on my home directory and recursively, seems to have fixed it. I did it this way: [FileManager]->[File system]->[home] right-click on [me]->[Properties]->[Permissions]-[Others]->[None], agree to recursive adjustment. Skip sym-links. I'm sure there's a much ...

Re: Managing groups for an added user...

Point of information: Setting the new user account type to 'standard' does not restrict that user from looking, read-only at my files. Additionally the account was created as 'custom' by default. This system is LM 17.3 32bit Xfce if that makes a difference.

[Solved] Managing groups for an added user...

Today I added an extra user to my computer in preparation for a contractor coming in to do some stuff on one of the systems. I logged on as the contractor and found I could read all the files in my own home directory. Zut Alors! I looked at the utility for managing users and groups "User Settings", ...

Jumbled wallpaper LM 17.3 32b XFCE

I've just done a fresh install of LM 17.3 32 bit XFCE, to replace 17.0 32 bit XFCE on the same hardware. Everything works as expected except the wallpaper (or the plain colour) is jumbled on start up. If I change or adjust the wallpaper the jumbling goes away until the next boot. I've googled the pr...

What is the current thinking on moving away from Samba?

With the world awash in what we must these days call malware, I'm thinking that, because I no longer have any Windows systems connected to my LAN, I could switch off Samba and move to an alternative less likely to be a vector. What's the current thinking on this? An overreaction? A good idea? Though...

Re: Which VPN should i use?

This article, and others like it, suggest that setting up your own VPN using the free-for-a-year AWS micro instance isn't too hard. I haven't tried it myself, but it seems simple enough: https://www.webdigi.co.uk/blog/2015/how-to-setup-your-own-private-secure-free-vpn-on-the-amazon-aws-cloud-in-10-m...
