[Solved] Thumbnails. Do not want!
ffmpegthumbnailer is causing file transfers of video files to be very slow. Can it be disabled, I don't value the thumbnails. (LM19.3 64b XFCE)

Re: Large video file copies, slow. ffmpegthumbnailer?
There were no differences between the environment for the two copies. The only difference was the file name ending, one being .mkv the other being .tar. The source, destination and everything else was the same. I assume that ffmpedthumbnailer was working to create a thumbnail during the copy and tha...

Large video file copies, slow. ffmpegthumbnailer?
I was copying a largish video file (22 Jiggy Bites) onto an old hard drive in an external box. The data rate seemed very slow and the drive seemed noisy. I looked on Taskmanager and saw a ffmpegthumbnailer process using quite a lot of cpu. The copy was going to take several hours. I cancelled, renam...

Re: How do I check what my DNS is?
Oh, right, so I can't check on the local machine where the DNS ultimately comes from. Thanks.

[Solved] How do I check what my DNS is?
I've recently flashed my router with OpenWrt and I was experimenting with alternate DNS settings. The OpenWrt interface is a bit, errr, opaque, so I wanted to see if the changes I made in OpenWrt were effective. I set the DNS to Quad Nine (9.9.9.9) in OpenWrt and after a bit of Googling I found the ...

Re: [Solved] I had to add nolapic to boot. What effect will this have?
Well, after further Googling I stumbled upon the boot parameter 'toshiba_acpi'. Mostly this comes up in discussions of activating the hardware buttons or sorting out unruly fans, but I thought "let's just try". It now boots ok AND shows both CPU's. To clarify - I've only added toshiba_acpi...

Re: I had to add nolapic to boot. What effect will this have?
I can confirm (lscpu) the effect is to run just one cpu. Additionally I can confirm that the system fails to boot with 'noapic' instead of 'nolapic'

Thanks for the input. I'm using LM 19.3, my adventures in old versions were purely diagnostic.

[Solved] I had to add nolapic to boot. What effect will this have?
A brief recap. I found an old laptop, a Toshiba Sat Pro A120, it's in very good condition, it has an SSD and 2 GB of memory, but it's 32 bit. The CPU is Intel T2060. It booted normally from the install USB, and booted normally at the first reboot. After that it wouldn't boot up. After a bit of exper...

Re: [Solved] New 19.3 32 bit - after install failing at "loading initial ramdisk"
Thanks for the reply. The BIOS states that it is ACPI. Perhaps it is a bit wonky. Who knows? Further information: More Googling lead to me discovering that nolapic turns off one CPU and what I should have selected is acpi=off. I changed the setting, but BOTH settings restore normal booting. HOWEVER ...

Re: New 19.3 32 bit - after install failing at "loading initial ramdisk"
After a bit more Googling I found instructions to add nolapic[1] after 'quiet splash' in the /etc/default/grub file, then run sudo update-grub. This seems to have fixed things. What consequences are there to doing without ACPI/apic?

Re: New 19.3 32 bit - after install failing at "loading initial ramdisk"
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I tried inxi -SM and the output does say '32 bit'. Further information: As an attempt at self help I tried installing Lubuntu 32 bit. It couldn't boot until I used advance mode and, on a whim, I tried acpi=no. After that it booted as normal. So it seems like an A...

[Solved] New 19.3 32 bit - after install failing at "loading initial ramdisk"
I found an old Toshiba laptop[1] lying around at a home so it thought I'd try it out. I install LM 19.3 32 bit/XFCE version. After installation I rebooted in the normal way ("remove the installation media and press enter"). This first reboot was successful. I ran the snapshot tool. Then I ...

Re: One handed mouse action for Right-click+Shift ?
In Thunar you can click and drag to select a list, but you have to click/drag other columns, not the file name column. Also, in 'Settings' ->'Accessibility'->'Keyboard' there's a setting for 'Sticky Keys'.

Oh, ho. Progress of a sort. I installed a .deb from this page:

I used:
which seems to have resolved most of the issues, therefore [Solved] for now.

I used:
Code: Select all
