Re: Mint Torrent Download - Too Many Redirects

I am having the same problem with Mint 18 Xfce 64. I think whoever set up the torrent made an error. Can download successfully only only using DHT, Local Peer Discovery and Peer Exchange. Seeding for several days cause I love Xfce.

Re: Any reason to upgrade these old computers?

Just keep the dust bunnies out and as one goes down scavenge it for parts instead of fixing it. Max out the RAM with the scavenged RAM and have two hard drives per box for disk images. Xfce is my favorite desktop. With a little work you can make it look a lot like the older versions of Windows, so t...

Re: Mint 17.2 KDE and Xfce have entered QA testing phase

Are you on the QA testing team? No, member of the forum and community, would join the testing team if I knew how. I thought that last time the downloads were on the http://community.linuxmint.com site before being announced. Xfce has been approved for RC release so we can expect that over next few ...

Re: message @ install with usb install

If you truly don't need/want Windows or anything like pictures, documents or music off the old install I would use GParted to wipe the entire drive and make new partitions. Then try to re-download the Mint ISO or check the MD5 on the one you have. If you are using a Windows machine to make a new liv...

Re: Need Linux distro recommendation

+1 on MX-14. 512MB RAM is the most the unit will support. 2 Expansion memory slots 256MB in each one. Check E-Bay or one of the forums that offer buying and selling of used parts, like ARS or Anandtech.

Re: Rebecca Version.

Sometimes there is a special key to push for booting from USB. Mine is F11. If that does not work then BlackVeils is correct. Try Plop. It works. Burn to a cd, no need to waist a DVD. Start using cd as boot device. Now you will be able to see and boot from the USB. You are never to old! Us old-timer...

Re: Rebecca Version.

You might be able to get Rebecca installed on your Acer Travelmate 2200. First of all I need to know a little about the hardware. Do you know what processor it has? It needs to have something called PAE capability, but most do. I personally would pick the Xfce ISO to download and then make a live US...

Re: Thoughts on flipping computers for profit?

Laptops are more difficult than desktops. Parts are not standard and they can be broken easily just from taking them apart, plus everything is so tiny and hard to see. I like to buy broken desktops from Craigslist. If they are newish, but broken or just virused up, and the seller has already gotten ...

Re: cat dander in PC case?

When blowing the case out, hold the fans in place so they do not spin at excessive RPMs. If you use a yard blower, stand back a couple of feet and have an assistant hold the fans in place. It may be hard to find an assistant, because they will get a snoot full of dust. Finish by cleaning the fan bla...

There is already a linux distro named "Rebecca Black." Named after an American pop singer and dancer who gained extensive media attention with the 2011 single "Friday". RebeccaBlackOS - http://sourceforge.net/projects/rebeccablackos/ http://i.imgur.com/HWGi6nY.jpg?2

Re: Every linux distro i tried freezes

While you have the case open blow the dust out. If you feel comfortable doing it you may want to apply new thermal compound between the heat sink and CPU. Perhaps Linux makes the computer run a little more hot than windows, but that problem is mainly on laptops. Removing and re-seating the video car...

Re: Computer repair shop won't fix mine because I use Linux

Same vintage as my old thinkpad R50. Keep it in the trunk of the car where lesser machines would melt from the heat. Have a adapter so I can plug in into the lighter to charge.Perfect for using the free wifi at a McDonalds. Keep an eye out on E-Bay. Sooner or later you will be able to get parts. Tho...

Re: Which do you prefer: Cinnamon or XFCE?

I'm one of Xfce's biggest fans. I can not believe that less than 5% of Mint users use Xfce. The nicest thing is that I can make it do what I want. Deleting the big ugly Whisker menu and going back to the old menu, no problem. Moving the panel from the top to the bottom, no problem. Some Des make it ...

Re: Lightweight OS? for old computer.

http://www.mepiscommunity.org/node/67 I'd try MX-14. They have a version for non-pae if you need it. It is a very nice fast distro even on older hardware.
