Re: Cell Phone Compatibility?

Not the "bingo" srtup that you describe but I like my iPhone 8 and I like LM so dropbox works great as far as moving pics from phone to PC.

Re: Converted from Cinnamon to Mate

I am glad MATE is working out for you. Just curious what you are running it on to see such a difference. What CPU and how much RAM to you have?

Re: antivirus

I am curious how you run Windows software on Windows without a license . . . legally? If you are replacing Windows you shoud already have a Windows license. Who said I don't have a license? I have paid licenses of several dozens of programs I've bought over the years (using a PC since the original ...

Re: antivirus

So run WIndows via dual boot or in a VM. Too complicated for most users, and too much hassle for frequent use (not to mention a VM requires you to pay for a Windows license). You know what average people do when security gets too much in their way: They just break it, keys under the flower pot near...

Re: Has anyone played around with MX Linux?

MX Linux is based on Debian stable branch and has absolutely nothing to do with Ubuntu. I understand - I was lazy - rather than write it as Debian/Ubuntu I should have been more clear and said based on Debian or Ubuntu (which of course is based on Debian). The bottom line though for me was MX was n...

Re: Has anyone played around with MX Linux?

I have booted it up in a VM and quite frankly it just seems to be another Debian/Ubuntu based OS running the Xfce DE. Since the only platform I can run it on is in a VM on an AMD 8 core Bulldozer CPU and 16g of RAM I cannot see any performance differences between lubuntu, pepperment etc. and MX (I c...

Re: Unwanted notifications (ads)

I still have these notification ads, despite the previous taken measures. And they also open when Firefox is closed. I clicked a couple of them to see where they would send me and it was Reddit. Check out PiHole - it's easy and works great. I got turned on to PiHole from a guy who does network secu...

Re: setting up Virtualbox

Have you installed VMware Tools ? Yes, I did but I just had to reboot for the internet connection to work So everything's working great now. The great thing with VMware is that it's trouble free and worked right out of the box I'm just wondering though. Do you have to keep windows updated and go th...

Re: setting up Virtualbox

And I'd like too since Virtualbox doesn't seem to be working even with secure boot disabled Problem is VMware really takes a long time to install, I still have the bundle window in the background trying to install but it's been an hour now and it's just at maybe 20% So I don't know, I think there m...

Re: setting up Virtualbox

When I have got that error, I have installed Oracle's VirtualBox. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads This may be an alternative to virtualbox that I found. I got tired of dealing with virtualbox and ended up installing VMware Workstation Player (free for non-commercial use). It just se...

Re: Free Software vs. Freedom Software

It sounds specifically like a US American patriotic thing. It puts me off. Why doesn't the English language have a word for 'gratis'/free of cost? That's the problem here. The English language certainly does have such a word - FREE Just some of the definitions (there are actually 13) of the word fr...

Catweazel is right for a home user behind a router you really don't need to turn on the firewall. That said it won't hurt to enable it - defense in depth I suppose is always prudent. I'm not sure how you were trying to turn it on but here are two ways to do it that work in Mint Cinnamon From the ter...

First - As to logging in as root, read this thread Root Login [Solved] https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=213173 BLUF: You should never have to login as root but it is a good idea from a security standpoint to set the root (UNIX) password go here (this site is maintained by Pjotr one of th...

Re: Firefox annoyance?

Upon opening a new tab in Firefox, I have the choice of seeing a blank page, or Firefox's home page. Is there a way to change this, maybe in "about:config" so that I can see MY home page when opening a new tab? Thanks guys. First, set to the URL to what you want your home page to be in Preferences ...
