Re: XFCE has lost its mind!

A hunch - updates to virtualbox related packages today appear to be causing widespread issues with different symptoms for different desktops. Try sudo apt remove virtualbox-guest* or if that doesn't work sudo apt remove virtualbox* . You may need a reboot after removing the problem packages. See ht...

XFCE has lost its mind! [SOLVED]

Edit: sorry for the title because I don't know for sure if XFCE is to blame. I've been using XFCE since before I used Mint, back to about 2008. This is the first time I've experienced this problem. I am on Mint 18.3 and my system is up to date as of this post. Backstory... I just picked up a new-to-...

Re: Linux Mint 17 "Qiana" MATE RC is out!

Awesome! Thanks... now I have to wait for XFCE version, unless I get impatient and just install MATE version and then XFCE. :)

Re: USB stopped working one day...

If you do 'lsmod | grep usb' what modules to you have loaded? usb_storage and usbhid (human interface device) You could try them both but I don't think the 'hid' module will affect the storage options. Thanks.... but $ lsmod | grep usb usbhid 47074 0 hid 101289 1 usbhid usb_storage 61300 0 Still no...

USB stopped working one day...

OK, so to set the stage I am running Mint15 64-bit on a desktop system I built, quad-core intel processor, 8 GB RAM, Nvidia GT210 card. I have been using this setup for over a year. At some point in the last few weeks, USB just stopped working. I can get power from it, as I have my phone plugged in ...

Re: Install Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMint UPDATED

From your screenshot, you are trying to run it in a terminal app on your desktop... the Xserver has to be stopped to install the driver. That is why you have to go to the console with CTRL-ALT-F1. You can't install it with the Xserver/display manager running.

Re: Install Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMint UPDATED

you pressed CTRL+ALT+F1 (at the same time)? That should have taken you to a text terminal, where you logged in, and stopped mdm? thats what I did. pressed CTRL+ALT+F1 (at the same time) logged in and after entered 'sudo service mdm stop' I hit enter and all went black. so you have integrated graphi...

Re: Install Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMint UPDATED

ahum, that actually was step 5. Not in the steps I did, which I posted about halfway down the first page of the thread. That's why I said "in what I did". :) Did you go any further, attempt to install the new driver, etc? no because I could not see anything as the screen went black. I tried to skip...

Re: Install Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMint UPDATED

I got a nvidia GTX 765M and an integrated intel. Where to go from here? I tried step 1. sudo service mdm stop and screen went black. Did you read all of the steps before doing step 1? (including the part where you go to a console via CTRL-ALT-F1) yes. Well, in looking back in this thread, I don't t...

Re: Install Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMint UPDATED

Wow. This is the first time - EVER - I have updated my nvidia drivers with no problems. I've been through the update hell many times, I've used NVIDIA cards since about 2000, and have been running Linux since 1998. I was mentally prepared (as much as I could be) to upgrade my drivers and had set asi...

Re: Cannot resume / wake up from suspend...

Thanks, I may have to check out tuxonice. It is a little more than what I am wanting, I was just looking for suspend and not hibernate. But maybe it will work out better. Always good to learn new things.

Re: Cannot resume / wake up from suspend...

I made the changes for lowercase "resume", no joy. Changed from uuid to /dev/sda7, no joy. All of the BIOS "wake-on" items have been enabled, but I can check again. $ free -gh total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3.9G 1.8G 2.1G 0B 142M 926M -/+ buffers/cache: 781M 3.1G Swap: 15G 0B 15G $ swapo...

I am using a PS2 KVM (not USB). From my first post: However, I have no way to wake up the system. Keyboard, mouse, power button depressed < 4 sec, nothing works. Cannot resume / wake up from suspend...

Searched and no answers seemed to fit for me, and not really sure what category to post under. Hate posting under Newbie since I've been using linux exclusively since 1998.... but if linux will do anything, it is humble you when you have a problem. :) Mint 15 xfce 64-bit 3.8.0-35-generic, running on...
