Need to change name of device in /proc/bus/input/devices

I'm trying to change the name of a device listed in /proc/bus/input/devices (at least I think I need to change it) specifically: I: Bus=0003 Vendor=046d Product=c215 Version=0110 N: Name="Logitech Logitech Extreme 3D" P: Phys=usb-0000:00:14.0-4.1/input0 S: Sysfs=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb1...

Re: How to Dual Boot with existing Win 7 Installation

My preference for "Dual Booting" is as follows: (this applies to both my laptops and desktops) Step #1) buy another HDD. The type will depend on your laptop. Hopefully your laptop has a second HDD bay, otherwise this will not work. Step #2) Remove / disconnect the HDD with your windows install Step ...

Re: Cpu frequency stays at the middle

This sounds like thermal throttling. Do you have temps that are associated with the cpu @ 3.5ghz and when it drops to 2.1ghz?

You can install Psensor to watch temps as you work if need.

Re: Suggestions for open source IP camera DVR OS

Open Source option is going to be ZoneMinder. That'll run services on your linux machine that will access the IP camera. But are you having troubles with the DVR password or the IP camera password? I have Reolink cameras and there is a password for the IP cameras as well. If I have to reset the IP c...

Re: building a gaming computer for Linux Mint 19.2

I recommend to stay AWAY from Asus motherboards for Mint installs for only two reasons. They are awesome boards but getting fan speeds reported in Mint is near impossible. If that is not a big deal then by all means Asus are great boards and that's actually what I have running in my two systems. So ...

Re: How to overclock the LCD refresh rate and also undervolt the CPU on Linux Mint

The Arch wiki has some good stuff on CPU tuning: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CPU_frequency_scaling cpupower looks like an interesting starting point. Thank you ! I would rather stick with NO TURBO solution. BTW...the no turbo solution is not persistent from boot to boot. It will revert to ...

Re: How to overclock the LCD refresh rate and also undervolt the CPU on Linux Mint

In order to undervolt, you have to directly write to registers. YOU NEED TO BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL here. In fact, I am telling you DO NOT DO THIS! That being said here is my -125mv undervolt for all cores + my vid card. There is NO guarantee that this will work for you. I have ROG-702vs Gaming Laptop....

Re: An ancient IBM Thinkpad G40 laptop saved from the curb

I've got an old daily driver that I built in 2006 runnin cinnamon 18.3 32bit e4300 @ 3.0 Ghz (highly overclocked for over 13 years!) Re: To TB Linux Mint AND Windows 7...?

If you are going to have two separate hdd's in your system, here is what I did and am quite happy. First: I only had one hdd installed. I then installed Win 7 to that hdd. It should be NTFS format for windows to install. Second: remove that drive (This is very important) and install the other hdd in...

You're absolutely right. <sigh>

Well time to break out my other mobo and overclock to compensate for the performance hit.

Thx Pjotr

Re: intel microcode 3.20190514.0ubuntu0.16.04.2 disables hyperthreading?

Is it more of a vulnerability on my cloud servers? I have no problem with throwing all patches at those regardless of performance hit. But what about my home box? Is it vulnerable too? How would it be vulnerable? I'm digging as hard as I can...but nothing is mentioned exactly how the attack could be...

intel microcode 3.20190514.0ubuntu0.16.04.2 disables hyperthreading?

I'm catching wind that this latest microdcode disables hyperthreading? I have the skylake i7-6700k and my google foo isn't turning up much since the initial report. I'm really interested in possible performance hit. If it does disable hyperthreading, did anyone notice a remarkable drop in performanc...

Re: LM 19.1 Gaming much slower than 18.3

Ok...confirmed. I went out and bought second 970 evo nvme 500gb. Identical to the other one. Why? Cause. Plus on the strix b250h I can run both at the same time. So I took out my original ssd (the slow sata one with all the original). So now all I have are the two nvme drives. I did a clean install ...

Re: LM 19.1 Gaming much slower than 18.3

Incorrect strategy #1. You have 2 500 GB hard drives. Why steamroll over 18.3 when you could also have 19.1 for testing with all that space? You can dual boot both off 1 drive or keep them on separate drives. Keep 18.3 for now. You have 2 years to figure it out. Test 19.1 and there will be some peo...

LM 19.1 Gaming much slower than 18.3

I did a complete fresh install on a new Nvme and decided to install 19.1 for the longer LTS. Everything looked fine and was fresh installing my steam games (nothing came from backups only fresh installs on this). Launched a few of them and noticed they were not buttery smooth like in 18.3 It was a r...

Re: Fans not working

Linux and Asus Laptop fans have been the bane of my existence. I have the GL702VS. Both of my fans work but I am unable to control them. They do work on a warmer schedule than I would prefer...but at least they are working. I would love to change the temp schedule of the fans..or to just add a 30% b...

Re: Playonlinux - fullscreen won't come to foreground. Can see it running in thumbnail

I solved it. Within the game configuration I set it to run in borderless window mode. Now the Cinnamon window manager keeps it in the foreground.

Weird solution..but it works.

[Solved] Playonlinux - fullscreen won't come to foreground. Can see it running in thumbnail

This is going to be hard to explain. When I run playonlinux with an emulated desktop (only way for the app to run 1920x1080) it runs but it will simply not be in the foreground. If I ALT-TAB I can see the thumbnail of the game running. With a joystick I can even control it and see it responding. But...

[Solved] Folder and file access denied...so fail2ban cannot view log

I know it's going to be a simple fix...but I cannot find the answer after 4 hours of search. I have nextcloud running on a little server that was installed by snap. The nextcloud.log is NOT located in the /var/log/ It is located in /var/snap/nextcloud/common/nextcloud/data/nextcloud.log The second "...
