Re: Password, again?

I think that is something of misappreciation going on in this thread as to what the original poster's complaint is at its root. It's all about feelings . The original poster seems new to (Linux) Mint and has come from a Windows system. On Windows passwords are rarely required, and in some versions o...

Re: What to type in command prompt (checksum)

@ JoeFootball It's a little confusing as to if atl_jt is trying do a hash check inside a Linux or a Windows system. @atl_jt I have just now updated my post here (given that things have changed a bit since I originally made that post) with clear instructions on how to do this hash check both inside a...

Re: What to type in command prompt (checksum)

Try using the method detailed here: viewtopic.php?f=60&t=217357#p1136607 You will get a copy of the checksum file for current Mint releases here: https://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/ - just select the version you want to check.

You could try using a different method of verifying. See this viewtopic.php?f=60&t=217357#p1136607 You will get a copy of the checksum file for current Mint releases here: https://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/ - just select the version you want to check.

Re: Documentation...

Actually in day to day use I hardly ever use the CLI - get nearly everything I want to do done via program GUIs. That said, when setting up the system that was the one time I found I needed to use the CLI a reasonable number of times. But for that it is easy to get the information needed from the we...

Re: Documentation...

A very good book for absolute beginners is Linux Mint Essentials . This book has a strong bias towards the Cinnamon desktop - though much of the information would still be of help using other desktops. You might get a better deal on price by buying direct from the publisher . Another good book is Li...

Re: A tip for newbies

+1 for using a program like CherryTree for notes. (I use Treepad Business Edition via Wine.) The notes can be organised into categories and the entire database of notes is very readily searchable. You can also store images and live url/links in the notes. Far more convenient than keeping individual ...

Does Suspend Mode Completely Shut-down the Hard-drive?

I had my computer in suspend mode. Someone doing vacuum-cleaning hit the computer case with considerable force, the computer very nearly tipped over completely. Now I'm wondering if my hard-drive was at risk of damage from such a blow while the system was in suspend mode. Really I'm wondering if the...

Re: HP Laserjet 1022 - can't print double sided

EDIT: After posting I noticed that this was an old thread but decided to leave this post in case anyone needs to refer to this thread in the future. I checked and the HP Laserjet 1022 isn't a auto-duplex (i.e. (auto) double-sided) printer, it only does simplex (i.e. single-sided) printing. This mean...

Re: Printer works without the driver?

I'm not an outright expert on this but Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is a common printer driver used in Linux, and certainly in Linux Mint. (When reading the wikipedia document it mentions "backends". As far as I am aware "backend" is Linux-speak for "driver".) This is why you don't need a prin...

I see that you're new to Mint Forum. Welcome. Hope you like Mint and stick around. :) If you want a GUI interface for the firewall then do the following: 1) Go (Start) Menu > Administration > Software Manager (and enter your password when asked to do so). 2) In the Software Manager search box type G...

Re: how to config google.com as default instead of google.yourcountry

Quite some time ago StartPage changed the way it presented results and, to my mind, the old way was the better way particularly when searching for images. It's a good idea to check out the difference between the classic Startpage and the redesigned StartPage and see which you prefer. Classic StartPa...

Re: Why does Linux Mint include a nearly 3 years old version of Transmission?

This is one of the two issues about Mint that find disappointing at times - old software, software years out of date. That said I still like Mint a lot. As far Transmission goes why not just try an up-to-date alternative. Tixati is very good and if you just want to play around with it a bit then you...

Re: Do you "Tweak Firefox" ? (About:Config)

Hello Jorn! I use the following tweak: browser.cache.disk.parent_directory I have it set up so that Firefox's cache2 data gets written into a ramdisk, not to HDD/SSD. (Note that in the webpage linked to above mozillaZine refers to this folder as "Cache" when in fact when Firefox creates the cache fo...

Re: Double Sided Printing No Longer Works

Hi JayBird, I don't know if this will solve your problem or not but I would try installing Boomaga and controlling your auto-duplex and simplex printing from within the Boomaga GUI. Works very well for me and it has other features that are very handy to have around. For how to install Boomaga see th...

Re: Linux DVD Burner that Can Burn Multi-session DVD's?

Hi phd21, If you read this thread you will see that k3b never worked for me doing multi-session DVD's. That said, I'm on a Mint Cinnamon system and my understanding is that k3b is really for KDE systems. Maybe this is why you have success in burning multi-session DVD's with it whereas I don't - I kn...

I'm a bit of a newbie myself. Nonetheless I've installed Boomaga via a PPA and nothing at all untoward has happened to my system. Your choice really. You could always try and see if helps to solve your problem. If it doesn't then just uninstall Boomaga via the Software Manager and then Remove the PP...

That's pretty cryptic. Are you saying that you found something that will burn multi-session DVD's from within Linux Mint? If you did what is it? What is "brain trust"?
