Re: Running a script from the KDE desktop

Thanks for the ideas. I seem to be having trouble with the startup script facilities in KDE (not just in Linux Mint's KDE, either). Anyway, on my 3rd or 4th try, I was able to make a new blank menu entry and put a command in the "Command" box, for instance: emacs -fn "MattAntique BT-11" /home/thumpd...

Re: How assign keyboard shortcuts in KDE 13?

To assign a keyboard shortcut to launch a program, you have to go into the menu. Right-click on the menu launcher in the lower left-hand corner. You should see "Edit Applications" in the context menu that comes up. So choose that. You'll see a window that is titled "KDE Menu Editor". In the left pan...

Running a script from the KDE desktop

I have a shell script that launches three files in one instance of Emacs. They're three home-office type files that I need to access several times a day. I also have the Linux Mint 13 KDE edition, which I installed recently and am liking a lot. In an ideal world, I'd be able to go Alt-F2, type in th...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

When I installed Mint 12, I liked MATE a lot. I downloaded the shiny new Mint Debian .iso the other day, and on Mint Debian I am madly in love with MATE. I couldn't tell you why, but it's like a few tiny little things made MATE approach perfection. I don't even remember GNOME 2.3x being this superb!...

Re: Startup applications problem

what version of MATE you have? the one which is shiped with Mint 12? It's 1.2. I added the Tridex repo a couple of weeks ago and caught up, and just got some updates this morning. That was a good question, though. It took me a while to figure out I needed to add that repo to get MATE improvements. ...

[SOLVED!] Startup applications problem

Hi, When I start Linux Mint 12 with the Cinnamon desktop (and also with Xfce, which I installed after the fact), ClipIt (a clipboard manager, forked from Parcellite) launches at startup with no intervention from me. When I start Mint with the MATE desktop, though, ClipIt doesn't start, even though i...

Re: Cinnamon disappears, other desktop peculiarities

OK, found it in http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=94842 , the Cinnamon 1.3 thread. There were several notices of this bug, proving that I did a lousy job searching before posting. Oddly enough, running apt show cinnamon | grep nvidia returned nothing, indicating that the Nvidia depen...

Cinnamon disappears, other desktop peculiarities

Hi. This is kind of a Desktop Environment question, but it's not about just one environment, so it might go here. I have Linux Mint 12 installed on two different computers. In each case, I installed the Xfce desktop to the existing installation. So at login, I have six choices. On Computer #1, the d...

Re: Ok the Name (M) for Mint 13! Start here:

I'm going to suggest

Myrna

I used to go out with a Myrna. That was like two million years ago (I taught her WordPerfect :D ) but it's kind of a cool name.

Re: Can't access SMB share (Mint rolling release Xfce)

To make absolutely sure this is not a samba problem you might want to confirm that the following command will connect to the remote share: thunar smb://192.168.0.100 Changing 192.168.0.100 to the ip address of the machine you are trying to connect to. If it connects then it's a network problem not ...

Re: Can't access SMB share (Mint rolling release Xfce)

Hi Altair, Thanks for such a fast reply. The two packages were installed with the most recent versions. I have seen Mint shutting down the smbd and nmbd daemons while I log off. I set the hostname to mintxfcelap during the install. You asked for the output of the smbtree command. Here it is. \\UBUNT...

[SOLVED] Can't access SMB share (Mint rolling release Xfce)

Hi. I just installed Linux Mint Xfce, the rolling release edition, on a partition on the computer in the living room. I opened Thunar and went [Ctrl-L] and typed in the name of a share on the computer upstairs, and after some 20 seconds, Thunar returned the message: "Failed to mount Windows share." ...
