Re: Monthly News – March 2020

Alternatives to "Warpinator": Facsimilar (Inspired by the notion of a "fax" -- facsimile -- the sending and receiving of a document over a network.) Spearmint (As squiggles3 remarked. Evokes the idea of sending/throwing, along with the obvious connotation -- and has a nice ring t...

Re: [Solved] Cinnamon CPU spikes every 3 seconds (64-bit)

I didn't note any restrictive permissions in my Copy folder... There's a synclog.txt in my Home's .copy folder (didn't see anything promising at /var/logs/), and I'm taking a look at that, but I'm not holding my breath. I see now that it's likely an issue with Copy, rather than Cinnamon. I'm glad th...

Re: Cinnamon CPU spikes every 3 seconds (64-bit)

Thanks, LinuxJim. That makes sense to me now. I think I'll mark this as "solved", since exiting Copy does indeed stop the spiking. However, if you've got any tips for discerning what it is about Copy or Cinnamon that leads to the delayed spiking, that'd be great. Like I said, though, Copy ...

Re: Problems installing Spotify

If you are still having this issue, you might be inspired by the workaround at this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qt4-x11/+bug/1193243 In the comments, it's suggested that one may rename the error-inducing Trolltech.conf file to Trolltech.conf .old ... Then, try your install ...

Re: Cinnamon CPU spikes every 3 seconds (64-bit)

I've tried your suggestion, LinuxJim, but I can't make sense of the output: F UID PID PPID PRI NI VSZ RSS WCHAN STAT TTY TIME COMMAND 4 0 1 0 20 0 33916 4236 poll_s Ss ? 0:01 /sbin/init 1 0 2 0 20 0 0 0 kthrea S ? 0:00 [kthreadd] 1 0 3 2 20 0 0 0 smpboo S ? 0:00 [ksoftirqd/0] 1 0 5 2 0 -20 0 0 worke...

Re: Cinnamon CPU spikes every 3 seconds (64-bit)

Thanks for your input, LinuxJim, but that code was already in my conky (listing the top 5, shown in the linked image from my original post ) -- that's how I noticed the spiking in the first place. With my previous post, I meant that it appears I won't be able to specifically identify the issue withi...

Re: Cinnamon CPU spikes every 3 seconds (64-bit)

Well, Cosmo., I'm between the multi-core system monitor and the Copy service. I've had the multi-core applet off and the Copy service on for about 5 hours and things seemed pretty stable, but I just started getting the spikes and display hiccups as I was writing this reply; I quit Copy and Cinnamon ...

Re: Cinnamon CPU spikes every 3 seconds (64-bit)

Uptime is now about 4 hours (1 hour in the test account, 3 in my primary account). I've added back everything that typically runs (Dropbox, Copy, Spotify, Xpad, Clipit, and the Weather applet), except I've left out the Multi-core system monitor applet. The resting CPU for Cinnamon has increased as I...

Re: Cinnamon CPU spikes every 3 seconds (64-bit)

Thank you for the suggestion, Cosmo, and the follow-up direction, Pjotr. I created a standard account for testing, and Cinnamon was behaving very well after an hour of uptime: CPU was mostly 0-2% -- memory seemed much less leaky too. I'm now back in my main account, and I've disabled my auto-startin...

[Solved] Cinnamon CPU spikes every 3 seconds (64-bit)

Within the past couple of weeks or so, I've noticed a frustrating change in the stability of my Mint 17.3's Cinnamon performance: every 3-3.5 seconds, no matter what I'm doing (or doing nothing at all), the display (not audio) briefly hangs as Cinnamon's CPU spikes: http://imgur.com/4GvgCDw *this co...

Re: no encryption passphrase?

Thank you, too, xenopeek. I've also encrypted my Home on Ubuntu and encountered the passphrase prompt on first run. Does anyone know why this prompt is apparently absent from Linux Mint [13]? This is a vital step for newbies and converts, who may well be oblivious to the precarious accessibility of ...

Re: Cinnamon problems - can't restore Minimized Windows

Hello. I have the same/similar problem as the original poster's #1: when I minimize a single window, I cannot restore it from the taskbar's window list with a click. I can right-click the window button and select restore, but the regular left-click restore functionality is apparently broken. It was ...
