Re: Is 64GB of memory overkill for Mint Cinammon?

People forget that RAM is not like CPU where because it it's there it's automatically maxed out. RAM is more like storage where you need a specific amount for a specific task. The most common high RAM tasks being VM's and video authoring related. Because paradoxically RAM is now slower than NVME SSD...

Re: yt-dlp mint

I have noticed that no matter what downloader you use there is some variance in quality output, sometimes the sound is worse and sometimes the video is grainy. Something happening on the server load or cache end probably, could be codec related but something seems to be influencing the bitrate to be...

As an alternative you can use https://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Download-Managers/WinX-YouTube-Downloader.shtml in a VM.... I never managed to get it properly running with wine. It's to my knowledge the only free downloader that does playlists properly at the desired resolution/size. It can eve...

Re: Stronghold HD without wine ?

2. Today we fear AI, 20 years ago we were afraid of videogames. That only proves moral panics are stupid and fail to ever achieve anything in a society hell bent on it's own destruction. Back then the fear was hysterical and today there is too little fear to the point where many choose to believe t...

Have not tried it for performance differences but some people use this for gaming.

https://liquorix.net/

So here is the possibility but it does apparently have a few stability problems now and then.

Lutris has come a long way from it's wobbly beginnings.... still has some rough edges but it's for me anyway the best of the lot.

Now the devs just need to make sure it does not go the way of POL.....

Fundamentally missing the point, do you have a simple way (that any idiot can use) to do all this To do all "THIS" what? This "WHAT"? No matter how a computer is set up with any system, it is impossible to down load information to work on if you aren't connected and can't downlo...

Re: Making Mint more "offline-friendly"

Do I use a Linux Mint computer off-line? Yes, we will be away from the internet for a few days every month at our vacation home. We call them a bach here and further south they are called a crib. Fundamentally missing the point, do you have a simple way (that any idiot can use) to do all this while...

Re: Game launch with error on Steam by playing windows game

That said though as a general PSA my point was already proven now that I think about it. Stick to base wine for OpenGL and proton for Vulkan.... though sometimes wine runs better than proton.

Re: Game launch with error on Steam by playing windows game

Linux is for older hardware.... This has been always true... partially. Where appropriate :| Proton - but not Wine in general - relies on Vulkan. Vulkan is a modern API compared to OpenGL and that obviously sets limits on older hardware support. The problem is you arrive at a point where support si...

Re: Making Mint more "offline-friendly"

That is one approach but it only really works if both machines are running exactly the same distro's and use the same applications.... and even then you can run into dependency hell due to that one little hidden package you installed years ago on one but not the other. It also does not work for flat...

Re: Game launch with error on Steam by playing windows game

This does effectively kill the argument that Linux is for older hardware.... if wine becomes incompatible with older driver versions it effectively means the Graphics Cards become just as unsupported on Linux as they are on Windows.

Re: Making Mint more "offline-friendly"

I think a lot of people don't understand what exactly it means to have offline PC's or PC's that have limited internet capability, they either never had the need to or have forgotten the required mindset. With windows it's easy, you move software around on flash drives or external HDD's. For most co...

Unfortunately "the Linux way" generally assumes internet is accessible.

It's a lot more work to do offline only in Linux than in windows ironically because you never have all dependencies satisfied.

That's pretty much impossible. Marketing, multiple connections per file. This is standard in Ubuntu/Mint/Debian This is standard in Ubuntu/Mint/Debian Not in the same way FDM does it. See the topic.
