Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

I have just tested LM17 with Xen 4.4 and here are my findings. 1) No error code 12 in Windows saying not enough resources to run the GPU. I get this error code if i use ubuntu 14.04 with xen 4.4. To solve this just use "device_model=xen-traditional" 2) XL GPU detached and attached bug. GPU cannot re...

@Nesousx

Can you send me the links where you read about KVM and how to setup on Ubuntu with VGA Passthrough. I'm interested to try the Pros and Cons compare to Xen.

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

I finally found out why Windows 8.1 reboot doesn't work for my PC. I have tried with "qemu-xen-traditional" and "qemu-xen-dm" they both give me same results and it is a 95% work. For my case instead of putting the script "gpedit.msc" startup i need to start the script in task scheduler. This way i c...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

After testing for the whole day i found out that if i install the GPLPV drivers, the reboot script won't work. I suspect it is the shutdown app that the GPLPV drivers install causes the XL fail to properly shutdown the windows and this causes the script fail to eject the PCI. Therefore you have to r...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

@Powerhouse The script works for the 1st few times after that it stop working because the VM cannot destroy itself after Windows shutdown. I'm not sure what or where went wrong but if i don't use the script and i start windows again without restarting the PC my linux mint will crash/hang. If i use t...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Hi All, I finally went and install LM16 with XEN 4.3 using XL toolstack instead of XM toolstack. And the results, Windows 8.1 can work on XL without having any error or bootloop. Performance in XL is much faster than XM, (based on my user experience. i didn't do any benchmark to confirm this) As for...

Hi, I want to ask is this do able or not. Currently my LM Xen and Windows is connected to the internet and server using LAN. Is it possible to connect LM and Win to server using LAN (Fix IP with NO internet connection) and use wifi dongle to access to internet? And how is it possible to set virtual ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

@Kabion Yes you can. What i did for mine is i formatted the the drive in NTFS format. LM can see and mount NTFS so i make it to always mount when boot up. Since xen can't mount NTFS, i share out the Drive/Folder using samba with full access and in windows i map the drive/folder. This way i can acces...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

@powerhouse I didn't follow the updated guide. I was still using the old guide before you updated it. using the older method i need to install qemu, passthrough the vga and also usb using initramfs, if not the usb sometimes doesn't get passthrough and it will cause the xen to crash. And I also compi...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

In LM16 with Xen 4.3, Windows 8.1 doesn't work. It just hangs.
I use WICD to replace my network-manager but sadly WICD doesn't work on LM16 at the moment.
Other than that everything looks good, but still go back to LM14 because LM16 can't display Chinese and Japanese fonts.

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Relax buddy, Let's go back to the basic. 1) You are using X79 chipset with Intel Core i7-4820K. Both VTd and VTx capable. 2) 2 graphic cards. ATI 7970 and ATI 7770. You want to passthrough ATI 7770. 3) Using Linux Mint Debian and not Linux Mint or any of the Ubuntu variant 4) I assume you got Xen4.3...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Question: What is the benefits (real, for final user) to have LM16 vs LM14? kernel features, packages updates, etc will not be available on LM14 since isnot a rolling release neither the latest one, am I right? My Ans: LM16 have newer stuff, newer kernel, fix up bugs compare to LM14. But LM14 is out...

Ok, when i use LM16 Xen4.3 the PCI doesn't get unbind. I will try the "blacklist=<module>" later when i get back and see if it works or not.
Thanks for the feedback.

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Hi Wotansp, After many trial and error with LM + Xen 4.1, 4.2, archlinux + kvm with Nvidia GPU, fedora + Xen/KVM, i got all of them working but i find LM14 + Xen 4.1 has the highest success rate. Didn't like fedora, archlinux is cool but too technical. Need to google for answers every time i need in...
