Re: Development with an eye towards making a Mint utility

I would go with write the interface programmatically or use Glade. Either of those options should be fine. Glade really is just about convenience.

Re: Papirus Icons Slow Down Nemo

Don't know if the same thing is happening here but we've run into a similar issue before with icon views. Papirus ships all it's icons as .svg. Mint-Y ships it's icons as PNG's rendered from an svg source. We've seen proof in the past that the PNG icon themes rendered much faster in icon views and a...

Re: Development with an eye towards making a Mint utility

For 2) hand coding or using Glade doesn't really matter. Glade is mostly used as a convenience and is not necessary.

Re: Cinnamon 6.0 and wayland support - (AMD graphics on Fedora)

I'm not sure about the display manager, do the DE's bring their own to the table? Because this is Workstation so I have Gnome, but I added Cinnamon for "casual" time and use Gnome when I want to focus hard on work. Cinnamon uses LightDM so it would likely have added that. Cinnamon doesn't...

After it crashes, you can check ~/.xsession-errors. It will often give you the reason so you have info to troubleshoot with.

Re: Menu description / comment toggle for apps

How are comments shown without an app being selected?

They are shown directly under the app name for all apps.

I believe one of the 3rd party menus like Cinnamenu offers this functionality. You can get it from System Settings->Applets.

Re: Cinnamon 6.0 and wayland suport.

If they are both running LMDE 6 then chances are they are both running the Nvidia-525 driver. Others getting graphics with Cinnamon on Wayland have been using newer Nvidia drivers. Just as a side note, I can run Wayland on Mint 21.3 with an Nvidia 1060 and the 525 driver. There are issues due to it...

Re: Desktop Background Image gone after Upgrade to 21.3

Don't know without knowing what was in it. I have seen the issue in the past where something in someones theme was managing to set a background color on the desktop window. The one that Nemo uses to hold the desktop icons. Since it was a solid color, it was covering the entire desktop and hiding the...

Re: Desktop Background Image gone after Upgrade to 21.3

I don't use Themes, just a "picture" from a Camera with the lens blocked. that pictures is on my /home/pictures Partition, so it stayed with me. If you just want a black background you can go to the Background settings and set the picture aspect to "No picture". Then you can jus...

Re: Basing Mint on Ubuntu vs Debian

Not quite true. LMDE has all the same features that Mint Cinnamon (Ubuntu) has Actually, that's not true :) LMDE is missing some obvious things from Ubuntu like the Driver Manager. You seem to misunderstand the main reason that LMDE exists. It's a backup plan in case Ubuntu becomes unviable as a ba...

Re: Cinnamon 6.0 and wayland suport.

EDIT: Thanks for the help, as long as x11 works i'm giving a damn to wayland. That's fine. X11 is the current standard for LMDE 6. Unless one wants to help experiment, no one needs to use wayland. Just to back up what SMG said here. Not only is there no need to use Wayland, but if you aren't prepar...

Re: Cinnamon.css reference?

If you're receptive to flatpaks, installing Oomox theme designer will go a long way to confirming whether or not you want to explore the mess that is theming in linux. You'll most like want to install gtk-3-examples and gtk-4-examples as well (both are in the Mint repositories) Invoke the widget-fa...

Re: LMDE Semi-Rolling Release

LMDE used to be semi-rolling. I don't see it going back to that. It was stopped for a reason. The biggest one being dev time spent on it. Since LMDE is not the main focus of Mint development it isn't going to get that kind of time dedication.

Re: Linux for new users-A cautionary tale

To be fair you are glossing over the biggest pain point that most new users have. OS installation. Most people don't do this. Doesn't matter if it's Windows or Linux. You have already done that work for them. Most of the issues you see are with people trying to get things set up and working correctl...

Re: What are the pros and cons of LMDE compared with Linux Mint Cinnamon?

Does LMDE get quicker updates? No. You get older versions of software in Debian Stable based distros than Ubuntu based ones. And ppas are not supported. This isn't always true. It's down to release timing. Right now, many of the applications in LMDE are actually newer. When Mint 22 is released, on ...

Re: Mint 22 open thread

I thought it was tied into the OS like Microsoft does with Windows. I had not realized it was a completely stand alone system which was only part of the DE/Window manager. That clarifies things for me. On top of that, Mint's DE / Window Manager have their own codebases anyway. The DE (Cinnamon) is ...
