The Dreaded "Preparing to Install" Spinwheel - Stuck
So I'm attempting a new dual-boot installation with Linux Mint 17.2 via USB stick ISO. I'm sitting here, stuck on the "Preparing to install Linux Mint" screen with the spinning wheel and it won't proceed beyond this point. Both items are checked (indicating I have enough drive space and an...

Re: Partition Sizes for Mint 17 Installation
So the issue is really how much I store in /home (including Dropbox). That makes sense. Yes, I was wondering about the swap partition. I won't need hibernate so I'm glad 1G is enough. I didn't see that distinction previously that the 1.5x recommended RAM was for hibernation. Sounds like I could just...

Partition Sizes for Mint 17 Installation
I see that the minimum disk size for Mint is 6GB with 20GB recommended. If I use an external drive for my data files, how long would it take before that 20GB is maxed out from software installs (generally, of course -- I realize it depends on how much software is installed, but would it fill up quic...

Re: Unable to connect to network / other PC
I just meant that the remote Windows machine was assigned a different IP address than what it was assigned previously when I initially saw it listed in the network in Mint. I shut down the PC over night and then I didn't see it under network the next day, but I don't know if that's because it was as...

Re: Unable to connect to network / other PC
My encrypt passwords was set = True, so I changed to Yes. I assume that means the same thing but went ahead and updated it (and cycled). But this time I do not see the other PC in the network connection at all. Though now it does have a different IP. But once I executed: nemo smb://192.168.3.7 -- I ...

Unable to connect to network / other PC
When I initially installed and configured Mint, I was able to access my other PC under Network. My other PC's name displayed there and clicking on it allowed access. Now, however, I suddenly have a Workgroup folder. When I click on that it brings up a dialog for me to enter my username and pw. While...

Re: One More External SSD Issue/Question for Newbie
I've reinstalled Mint on the internal SSD. I'm still getting ~425 MB/sec. It's slightly slower than my earlier reading but that could be because that was immediately post-fstrim and now I've reinstalled the OS. I was just curious to see if Mint on SSD would boot quicker than our Windows 8.1 machine ...

Re: One More External SSD Issue/Question for Newbie
Now that I've performed the fstrim, here are the performance numbers:
HP-Pavilion-Mini # sudo fstrim -v /
/: 197093588992 bytes were trimmed
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 8024 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4013.57 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 1332 MB in 3.00 seconds = 443.34 MB/sec

Re: One More External SSD Issue/Question for Newbie
Hi Jeepty -- I have TRIM enabled via discard in fstab only. The fstrim would not work with the drive on USB 3. BUT -- I now have the drive installed, and it did improve the speed. Was still hoping for a little more (maybe now the alignment would help?). Here are the results: HP-Pavilion-Mini # hdpar...

One More External SSD Issue [SOLVED]
My external SSD is running very slowly: HP-Pavilion-Mini # hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb /dev/sdb: Timing cached reads: 8596 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4300.69 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 334 MB in 3.01 seconds = 110.85 MB/sec I've done some research and have aligned and realigned the partitions per gdisk /d...

Re: TRIM Question
I found this link that supports your answer (thought it's a bit dated):
http://askubuntu.com/questions/262154/t ... -supported
I suppose this is one reason to purchase an internal SSD before too long.

Re: TRIM Question
Yes, thank you -- I think the page that I got the command from just had a typo (it mistakenly had the -v first so I did a copy/paste of that command). Unfortunately, it doesn't work the other way either: # sudo fstrim -v / fstrim: /: FITRIM ioctl failed: Operation not supported As root: # fstrim -v ...

TRIM Question [SOLVED]
I've been researching how to trim my SSD boot drive but am having problems making it work. First, TRIM does seem to be supported for my drive, per: HP-Pavilion-Mini / # hdparm -I /dev/sdb | grep TRIM * Data Set Management TRIM supported (limit 1 block) * Deterministic read data after TRIM But for so...
