Re: Upgrading from XP to linux

Just copy your files that you want to keep to a USB Stick or upload them to a backup service like Dropbox.

Then you simply follow a guide like this one;
http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Linux-Mint

Here is the extended official guide:

Re: why are there so many editions?

Freedom = many options to choose .. :wink: Actually, i have no idea what the difference is between the various versions. Cinnemon, LMD or what have you, it is all greek to me. Re: All system sound disappearing

Does this ever happen even if you restart without booting up windows in between?

I am not so sure that Windows have anything to do with it, it might just be that your sound on Linux is struggling.

Re: password manager (roboform like) ?

I usually stick with the ones that are in he repo already (since I know that they will be updated if something new comes along/bugs are discovered). And I think Keepass is the only one in the standard repo right now. Keepass does not require an Internet connection and is open source, so anyone can s...

Re: What is a kernel and how do I update it?

The kernel is the "core" (hence the name kernel), that all Linux Distributions share, the kernel is Linux if you want. "The Linux kernel is the operating system kernel used by the Linux family of Unix-like operating systems.[8] It is a prominent example of free and open source software.[9] The Linux...

Re: Linux: Tricks of the Trade -- tips from our members

Here is a tip from a Newbie to other newbies: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. This sounds like common sense, and I assume I have none, because I just spent the ENTIRE weekend trying without success to SIMPLY put Linux Mint on a desktop. Today I did some more Google scholaring and read within the first page ...

Re: Stuck in gnome desktop

Hmm strange, Im afraid I never had enough problems with my GPU to know a lot about troubleshooting.

It does seam like you might have installed the drivers but a library is missing or you have not pointed them correctly during installation.

Hopefully someone else can be of more help. :)

Re: LM15 - HDMI sound not working

A lot of people (me included) have this problem;
Here is some Ubuntu user with the problem; https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1169761

If you can do it updating to latest kernel seems like a solution for some people.

Has anyone had a problem adding new users with Mint 15 Cinnamon? Menu >Administration >User Accounts I get a system setting icon in the tray but that is it. Nothing else, no window, nothing. Works fine in Mint 14. The other tools under adminstration seem to function but not user accounts. Is this b...

Re: Stuck in gnome desktop

If I can take a guess you have cinnamon but it wont display since your drivers are still broke/not configured correctly and therefore Mint falls back to Gnome (a less intense desktop GUI). So if you fix your drivers you should be able to get your cinnamon back. What does; glxinfo | grep OpenGL. tell...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

Okay, admittedly, I've read hardly any of this thread, but I'm afraid I don't really have the time right now, and I did have a few thoughts about this. Maybe some of this has already been said, and maybe some people would disagree with some of the things that I think. First of all, Mint is a very g...

The new easy way is:

Menu --> Update Manager ---> Edit ---> Preferences ---> Mark everything, including Level 4 and 5

Reload updates and update kernel.

Software Manager will not load... i enter admin password, hit ok, and then nothing happens. Confirmed, hope we get a hotfix or something. Re: Backgrounds from Themes?

Themes don't include backgrounds. You set backgrounds yourself. So any background visible in a screenshot for a theme is just the background the person taking the screenshot had set; it's not in any way included in the theme. That was the answer I was afraid of getting. :( Well well, of to google a...

Backgrounds from Themes?

Hi! Is there any way to get the backgrounds that goes with the themes in "Themes" in Linux Mint? I think some of the backgrounds goes very good with the themes presented, but when I install the theme I do not get the option to to change the backgrounds. Are the backgrounds that goes with the theme i...

Tried running it under wine?

It is pretty well known that Wine and iTunes have not been getting along very well, but as time passes these two programs have started to fight less and less.

Write back and let me know how it went.
