[Solved] Alt key behaviour

Hi all I'm trying to use Blender together with a Wacom graphics tablet. Blender normally needs a middle mouse button and a mouse wheel, but it has a special compatibility mode where a graphics tablet user/laptop user/ trackball user/whatever can hold down the alt key and move the mouse instead. Unfo...

Re: Mint-Forum-colours Cinnamon theme!!

This is my favourite new theme ever. It's soothing, relaxing, modern, and simple.

If I could make one change, it would be slightly higher contrast on the start bar.

Re: Can't boot to install Linux Mint on Lenovo Win 8 laptop

I'm using a Lenovo G780 that originally came with Windows 8. My laptop always boots up with a black screen, but the reason is that it always resets the screen brightness to zero on boot, so the backlight doesn't come on. If you start it booting up, and then hold down the function key and the up arro...

Re: What prompted your move to linux?

Bought a new laptop, it came pre-loaded with Windows 8. Looked at Windows 8. Decided I wanted a laptop, not an oversized phone without a touchscreen. Shut down new laptop, fired up old laptop, researched Linux, decided on Linux Mint, and here I am.

Re: [SOLVED] Blackscreen unless in compatibility mode

So I followed the XRANDR instructions again to make sure I hadn't missed anything, and, well, I must have done, because this time it worked. I'm logged in and not in compatibility mode.

Thank you Spearmint2. You were very patient and helpful.

Re: Blackscreen unless in compatibility mode

Thanks. I'm using the driver linked on that page----the one called "Intel(R) Linux* Graphics Installer version 1.0.1 for Ubuntu* 13.04 (64-bit)"----already.

I've read the links but they seem to be aimed at people with a higher level of technical knowledge than me. I'm stuck.

Re: Blackscreen unless in compatibility mode

Thanks, Spearmint2: you've been really helpful so far. Unfortunately I don't have convenient access to a separate monitor. I'll try to follow the links, read around and understand what I can do.

Re: Blackscreen unless in compatibility mode

I've also installed xbacklight.

Code: Select all

xbacklight -get
gives me null output. I'm still in software rendering mode when I do these things because it's the only way I can read my screen.

Re: Blackscreen unless in compatibility mode

You can use xrandr to test it, reboot if it fails and it will reset. These links explain how to make it permanent. Notice for HDMI, and based on video chip used, there are some designators other than VGA which would be more to your preference. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution/#Adding_und...

Re: Blackscreen unless in compatibility mode

It's a graphical login screen of the normal type that I get when in software rendering mode. The xrandr output is as follows:- xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 1600 x 900, current 1600 x 900, maximum 1600 x 900 default connected 1600x900+0+0 (0x144) normal (no...

Re: Blackscreen unless in compatibility mode

Thank you. I did that; when I found it the line said ... ro quiet splash $vt_handoff I added vga=791, and the screen seemed to go black as before----but then I noticed there was a login screen almost visibile (very dark against a black background). Unfortunately it's too dark to use so I'm back in s...

Thank you. I was able to download and install the drivers with no problem. However, the machine will still only work if I hold down the shift key during bootup and put it in software rendering mode.
