Red border around un-maximized windows

I don't know since when, but I see red borders around some windows that are not maximized. See below the screen shot of calculator app: calc.png Same appears on Firefox if I were to un-maximize it. As mentioned, not all windows get this - for example Libre Office Calc. How can I get rid of it? FWIW:...

Re: LinuxMint 20 installation: boot partition vs /boot

Thank you. Setting aside this particular instance, would I see any particular benefit from using UEFI boot in general?

Re: LinuxMint 20 installation: boot partition vs /boot

OK, what if I convert that EFI partition? Does that allow me to boot in EFI mode?

Admittedly, I don't know if I should boot in UEFI mode. Are there benefits in doing so? Am I missing anything by not booting so?

Re: LinuxMint 20 installation: boot partition vs /boot

I checked my BIOS, and it's currently configured to boot in legacy mode! I tried changing it to UEFI (I haven't installed new Mint yet), but that failed to boot - says, no boot device found. Presumbaly it's because of missing bios_grub partition? Additional questions: if I were to install Mint with ...

Re: LinuxMint 20 installation: boot partition vs /boot

gparted says the partition table is gpt. When I installed the current Mint, I don't recall specifically choosing UEFI or otherwise. I do vividly recall not bothering about /boot, but then it failed to boot (as mentioned in the original post). Providing a /boot "fixed" it. Per your suggesti...

LinuxMint 20 installation: boot partition vs /boot

I was going to install LinuxMint 20 afresh, replacing 17.2 (as there were no upgrade options offered). I chose to retain my /home, so went into 'Something else'. Per my current disk structure, I chose /boot, /, and /home partitions, but a dialog popped up, warning about boot partition: dialog.png Th...

Upgrading from 19.2 to 20

On the menu from update manager, I'm only offered to upgrade to 19.3. I'm looking for instrutions to upgrade directly to 20 from 19.2. Some guides I could find talk only about upgrading from 19.3, not 19.2.

Can some one chip in please?

Thanks.

Re: [Security issue] LM19: Desktop won't lock after suspend

I upgraded to 19.2, and this seems to have been fixed for me--at least for the use case I reported.

Turning mitigations off

I picked up a post from Hacker News that points to this page about turning off kernel mitigrations: https://linuxreviews.org/HOWTO_make_Linux_run_blazing_fast_(again)_on_Intel_CPUs. I haven't made up my mind whether or not to disable them, but if I were to do so, in which file shall I enter these ke...

Re: Kingston DataTraveler extremely slow

Yes, they are slow. The data travelers I have are about 5MBs write speed. I only use them now for on a key ring, which they fit well onto, otherwise prefer the Samsung. https://usb.userbenchmark.com/Kingston-DataTraveler-100-G3-USB-30-16GB/Rating/1521 Ah, thank you. I was worried that it's my lapto...

Kingston DataTraveler extremely slow

I find that ext formatting a Kingston DataTraveler 64GB USB3.0 pen drive is taking over an hour! Even after formatting, data transfer is painfully slow. This happens only with Kingston devices. I've so far tried 2 brand new devices of the same make, and both have the same problem. I tried formatting...

USB keyboard/mouse not detected after resume

I've an external USB keyboard and mouse connected via. a hub to my laptop. I occasionally suspend/resume the machine. Sometimes, after resuming from suspend, the keyboard and mouse aren't recognized. It's as if the port has gone dead - it wouldn't recognize any device even if I plug them out and bac...

Re: LM19: Desktop won't lock after suspend

I dont't think there's any doubt that this issue is real or reproducible. I however doubt this issue is given the weight it deserves. Perhaps we should be voicing this on the Github issue(s) linked above instead.

Re: LM19: Desktop won't lock after suspend

Indeed. My report on control center has been closed, and I've been pointed to the screen saver issue instead. I've subscribed to it. Given its severity, and that nobody has responded to it for a month, I don't see it getting fixed anytime soon.

Re: LM19: Desktop won't lock after suspend

Having rebooted since it happened to me, I reproduced this behavior again. Here's the sequence: * Resume from suspend. I'm using my laptop screen only at this point. I'm taken to login screen. So far so good. * Plug a my main monitor in, and voila, by the time the new display is switched (I had conf...

Re: LM19: Desktop won't lock after suspend

It's set to 5 minutes, and had always been (including my previous 18.3). My understanding is that it's the time the computer is required to be idle before screen saver kicks in, and nothing else. While checking this out, I tried launching "Login Window" menu item, but it wouldn't. Then I r...

Re: LM19: Desktop won't lock after suspend

I'm afraid I don't have any settings related to locking screen in power management. But as I mentioned, the screen does lock sometimes, so I think it's asked to do it by default, but won't at times.

[Security issue] LM19: Desktop won't lock after suspend

I upgraded from 18.3 to 19 (64-bit). I just found out that, once I resume from laptop suspend, I'm not always taken to the login screen. Sometimes it does; other times, I'm directly taken to the unlocked desktop. Once the latter happens, I'm unable to lock the desktop at all - Ctrl+Alt+L has no effe...
