Re: Linux Mint 18 KDE running hot

Thank you both for the replies (logging in on an old(er) account). I have given up 18 KDE... it is definitely NOT ready for prime time. The heat and noise are not the only problem after putting it through its paces. Back to Cinnamon for me. And I did try the TLP based on advice elsewhere. It did not...

Linux Mint 18 KDE running hot

I have been a Cinnamon user for about 3 years across two machinse. I notice heat problems growing with each edition. I tried the KDE Beta 18 and saw exceptional improvement, though it was too unstable in certain areas. Switched to KDE 17.3 and waited, and ran much cooler. Now on KDE 18 again, and my...

Re: Causing remote file lock out in "public" folder

The affect shares are on a newly installed LinuxMint 17.3.

Of the three others accessing...
my own: LM 17.3
the 2nd: Deepin 15.1.1
the 3rd: OSX (lastest, don't remember the version #).

The other machines did not cause the effect noticed; only my own (so far).

Causing remote file lock out in "public" folder

It would appear that when I access and edit a file I (text, etc) in an remote "public" folder on the local wireless network that the file can NEVER be edited again by any of user of the little household network. I am baffled as to why my machine may be doing this and the two other notebooks on the n...

VLC stopped "launching"

An unusual situation I need to solve. VLC Media Player stopped launching from the menu. I have uninstalled it several ways (menu right-click, software manager, synaptic, terminal, etc.) and reinstalled, but always the same situation. So... anyone have some ideas about this?

Re: Update Manager does not launch

Oh, I know. And as I have only been on LM full time for about 3 months, I expect the learning curve to last a bit longer.

No effect. All is the same. Looks like a reinstall more and more, but thanks again for trying.

Re: Update Manager does not launch

Okay, my goof. I just thought it might clean up some leftover mess. Here is the output from the last terminal command you recommended. Only a little of this makes any sense to me for the moment. 2014-12-26 18:54:58 status half-installed update-notifier:amd64 0.154.1ubuntu1 2014-12-26 18:54:58 status...

Re: Update Manager does not launch

Okay, I did as you suggested and the "update" did couple of things that flew. The "upgrade" had no effect but recommended a general cleanup via "autoremove." Big mistake; now several icons for memory resident stuff won't show; such as dropbox. And the folders for its storage are no longer live linke...

Update Manager does not launch

I have been running LM 17.1 for several weeks, but recently the Update Manager will not initialize on boot or launch manually. I am not a complete newbie but out of my depth for how to investigate. Any advice would be helpful.

Re: Software Manager won't launch and Synaptic's showing err

Hello, ren4itoy. Try to recover the status file from a backup which the system should have created itself. In a terminal try this commmandline, please: sudo cp /var/backups/dpkg.status.0 /var/lib/dpkg/status Next try to use Synaptic of Software Manager again. HTH, Karl Hi Karl, Same issue for me. I...

Re: Assistance needed: Font Cache, Font Managers, etc.

Thanks, DrHu. I will look in those locations and see what I can find. Everytime I now open an application that must read the font cache, it hangs; so I definitely messed up somewhere. And I will look around for a real font manager, but I do not hold out much hope. However, even if there aren't any c...

Assistance needed: Font Cache, Font Managers, etc.

Well, I did a major screw up... perhaps. I maintain a library of about 32,000 font files on a portable drive. Using "Font Manager," I attempted to get (just) a listing of all of those fonts, as both Font Matrix and the old FontyPython were not cutting it. Instead, it appears that I "installed" all o...

Re: LinuxMint 17, Macbook Pro, disable/enable touchpad by ke

The best and simplest way is to let OS do it automatically. See my post here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2120763&s=301904949118915e4957debd54a4dd46&p=12562008#post12562008 or just run synclient command from keyboard shortcut. While at heart I agree with you... as a semi-newbie, the pa...
