Re: Include the latest NVIDIA (and AMD) graphics drivers for a better out-of-the-box experience

KaOS Linux and Mageia 7 have options to boot the live usb in nvidia non-free mode. but you will never see bleeding edge software in ubuntu. if you don't see it in ubuntu you will not see it in mint. mint depends way too much on ubuntu But since Mint is based on Ubuntu currently, and because adding ...

Re: Include the latest NVIDIA (and AMD) graphics drivers for a better out-of-the-box experience

Oh and by the way, the top comment in this Reddit thread was the reason I came back here to update this thread. Fairly big discussion about getting the newest NVIDIA drivers and confusion around that for newbies, and how other distros do it better. Might be worth a read. https://www.reddit.com/r/lin...

Re: Include the latest NVIDIA (and AMD) graphics drivers for a better out-of-the-box experience

The Driver Manager already offers these drivers. This is a request to have it offer the newer drivers, that's all. Video driver updates are rather important because they contain updated definitions for what certain objects should like under OpenGL, but that said, the 390 driver is LTS, so it is mai...

Re: Include the latest NVIDIA (and AMD) graphics drivers for a better out-of-the-box experience

OK, gotcha. Actually, I can confirm that's what adding the graphics-drivers PPA does, in fact. Right now, I have the 390, 396, 410, 415, 418, and nouveau drivers all showing in my Driver Manager because I have that PPA added, and I'm 99% sure that the 390 and/or 396 drivers are the older original o...

Re: Include the latest NVIDIA (and AMD) graphics drivers for a better out-of-the-box experience

The problem with Linux GPU drivers, especially with Nvidia, is that they drop support for older GPUs all the time. At least with the stock drivers that come with Mint, you're very likely to get one that will support your GPU. As already mentioned in this thread, adding the PPA is very easy. This is...

Re: Include the latest NVIDIA (and AMD) graphics drivers for a better out-of-the-box experience

I think it'd make sense to do this for users as part of their installation experience I agree that the user experience would be enhanced but the nVidia drivers aren't 'free', as in open source. Even the kernel complains about tainting when it detects the nVidia driver. There are onerous license con...

Re: Include the latest NVIDIA (and AMD) graphics drivers for a better out-of-the-box experience

Have any of the devs considered making the newest drivers in the graphics-drivers PPA available in the driver manager tool, so that the PPA will get added upon selecting one of those drivers, or even just making the graphics-drivers be a default PPA? Or some other way of doing it, but you get the ge...

DNS issues, especially when using a VPN? Try this. (Bug: Server returned error NXDOMAIN)

Posting this here in case it helps someone else. For me this issue was happening when using a VPN on a VM host. The Linux guest in Virtualbox kept having it's DNS broken intermittently, so I'm posting the workaround here. A patch with the actual fix for this issue has been merged into systemd (see b...

Re: Mouse scroll wheel setting?

Mouse scroll wheel accel etc. settings have been conspicuously missing in Linux for many years. I'm afraid that I don't expect that to change any time soon if ever. Sorry but it's true. Where should they be? That's the first step. Some users have reported settings for them in xinput list-props. Sin...

Re: Mouse scroll wheel setting?

Anyone know what the method is supposed to be going forward for adjusting mouse scroll wheel distance/speed in all applications? None of these settings are for scroll wheel distance/speed: $ xinput list-props 12 Device 'SINOWEALTH Game Mouse': Device Enabled (153): 1 Coordinate Transformation Matrix...

Re: Linux 19.1 - Screen Blinks...

No, I didn't add it. The last time a twiddled with settings like these was to tweak XFCE4's compositor issues. I eventually quit using XFCE4 because of tearing---lost patience. It's possible that Mint's setting is hardware dependent... Could be. All I know is out of two computers that both are runn...

Nope, that config wasn't added into /etc/environment. Maybe you added it and forgot? I'm not convinced that's the problem but you can always reboot and find out!

Re: Linux 19.1 - Screen Blinks...

Thanks Yfrwif, over at the Linux Mint Blog, where you also posted a comment, a possible solution was mentioned further down: Everything works fine by removing the (useless option ?) “CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling” in the /etc/environment file and after the upgrade. I've trie...

Re: Anyone else get flickering desktop backgrounds and windows periodically on NVIDIA cards in Cinnamon?

Just upgraded to Linux Mint 19.1 and am experiencing severe flickering and misplaced frames (window elements flickering back and forth between former and current states): System: Host: vtpoet-Lenovo-Yoga-2-11 Kernel: 4.18.0-041800-generic x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Cinnamon 4.0.8 Distro: Linux Mint 1...

Re: Why not enable installation on 64bit computers with 32bit EFI?

Clem added it to the roadmap for 19.2, it was too late for 19.1. Great to hear! I was just struggling to install 19.1 to my new tablet before finding out about this missing bootia32.efi issue that Fedora and other distros have already remedied. These little devices are becoming more and more common...

Mouse scroll wheel setting?

Are there any plans to add a mouse scroll wheel adjustment to the mouse and touchpad settings section? That would be great!
