VPN option for "always-on firewall" aka "advanced kill switch"

It would be cool if the VPN app contained a feature to enable an always-on firewall. It would control iptables or whatever Mint was using for a firewall at that time. It could deny all traffic besides the VPN server (and router) traffic with an option to also allow LAN traffic. The service should st...

Cinnamon's background/wallpaper zooms in over time after changing monitors instead of reloading the original image

I have a complex setup where a receiver is hooked up to one of two monitors while the other one is directly connected. The receiver will be powered off sometimes which means the connected monitor isn't available to Cinnamon I think what is happening is that the receiver has some tiny (probably 640x4...

Re: bit rot protection (data checksumming) options: ( ZFS ) vs. ( Linux Software RAID + BTRFS )

I remember reading somewhere that the combination MDADM + Btrfs does not solve the problem of bit-rot. Creating a Btrfs file system on top of MDADM results in the fact that Btrfs system will be unaware of the array - knowing about the array structure is important for solving bit-rot (pariry, etc......

I confirm it's really annoying ... !
Something to do ? Somewhere to report ?

Thanks !

Curious but did you upgrade or do a fresh install of Mint 21? If you upgraded, did you try to reproduce the issue under a new account?

Re: Mint 21 screen lock only partially obscures desktop sometimes

I have a strong feeling this has nothing to do with settings, and more to do with confusion/race conditions when the video configuration changes - either by adding/removing monitors, scaling changing, combinations of both. I've noticed different behavior under different hardware configurations as w...

Re: [bug] Software Manager + Flatpak - Dependency installation can silently fail if not enough space on Linux Mint 21

Report it here: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintinstall/issues I don't have a github account, nor do I want one. They're owned by Microsoft, so I will never have an account there as I will never support Microsoft. Annoying, because I'd contribute more if the Mint engineers moved to a better web ho...

Re: Mint 21 screen lock only partially obscures desktop sometimes

There aren't any configuration files for cinnamon-screensaver - everything is stored in dconf. It's interesting this doesn't appear to happen with a new user, though this could only be by chance - I've been chasing similar issues for a small group of users for a long time but could never get anythi...

[bug] Software Manager + Flatpak - Dependency installation can silently fail if not enough space on Linux Mint 21

So I discovered this bug with Software Center and flatpak where if you run low on space for installing all the required dependencies, Software Center will pop up asking you to install the dependencies like normal, but it will silently fail to install them successfully, and instead it will show the &...

Re: Mint 21 screen lock only partially obscures desktop sometimes

Thanks mtwebster as always. Without trying your patch, I wasn't able to reproduce the issue on a fresh user, though. So your patch might be a fix for some configuration issue related to version migrations or something, but since a fresh user doesn't experience this issue, the workaround fix should b...

Re: Mint 21 screen lock only partially obscures desktop sometimes

Same issue here. Nvidia, upgrade from 20 to 21, differently-sized monitors. When I return to find the screen locked, for me I see my entire desktop, not hidden at all, but when I try to type or click on anything I quickly come to realize that the screen is actually locked but I can't see the locker ...

Re: Flatpak Steam crashes cinnamon on NVIDIA 510 driver

Why use the flatpak for steam? Just run it an check for updates manually within it. For the extra security that comes from sandboxing Steam? For if someone is running a Linux distro that doesn't have a native Steam package? Of course neither matters because it should be working and isn't, so whomev...

Re: Flatpak Steam crashes cinnamon on NVIDIA 510 driver

For the extra security that comes from sandboxing Steam? For if someone is running a Linux distro that doesn't have a native Steam package? At this point I think a general sandbox mode is better than the unwieldiness of flatpaks.... so much less effort. I agree we should have a build-in way to run ...

Re: Flatpak Steam crashes cinnamon on NVIDIA 510 driver

Thank you for sharing the workaround. Now I can play games. I just installed steam from flatpak and I'm having this issue too. I changed from deb installation because steam updated today and it wasn't launching any game. The archlinux wiki suggested this: cd ~/.steam/root/ubuntu12_32 file * | grep ...

Re: Flatpak Steam crashes cinnamon on NVIDIA 510 driver

Everyone raves about flatpak but it's a can of worms, performance of some apps can be poor, theming doesn't apply, they take up too much space and you get weird issues like these. Personally, I do Apt > .deb file > App Image > Compile from Source > Flatpak. Except flatpaks are easier and give you t...

Re: Steam crashes cinnamon on NVIDIA 510 driver

It looks like you are using the flatpak version of Steam. Have you tried using the version found in the repo or via the .deb that steam themselves provide? Good point, and yes the native one works fine, so this is specifically a flatpak+Steam+NVIDIA+? issue then. All flatpak packages, NVIDIA driver...

Flatpak Steam crashes cinnamon on NVIDIA 510 driver

This issue is not solved, only worked around. Also started a Steam discussion post here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/3415431214852542112/ Regular native Steam runs fine, but the Flatpak version crashes the desktop and throws me back to the login screen (and sometimes leaves ...

bit rot protection (data checksumming) options: ( ZFS ) vs. ( Linux Software RAID + BTRFS )

Some problems with ZFS for regular home data expansion needs are that only recent development versions of ZFS support expanding the size of raidz[1-3] pools; ZFS won't readjust the parity amount for existing files in post-expand scrubs, making users have to manually re-write data in order to readjus...

Re: Video playback freezes every 30 seconds

With Mint 20, it's gnome-shell and gdm3 that are needed for Wayland to my knowledge. Regardless, that's what I installed. I think the desktop option in GDM was called Ubuntu or something like that as opposed to Cinnamon or Cinnamon w/ software rendering. Mint does not support Wayland at all. You ar...
