Re: Point Linux OS vs Linux Mint 15 MATE.

Well, after installing Point Linux on my daughter's old desktop computer and seeing how well it ran and after installing it on my back up laptop I've installed it on my primary laptop so I've totally converted over to Point Linux OS. It's Debian 7.1 based with the MATE/Gnome2 style desktop and I rea...

Re: Am I expecting to much Mint Mate 15 Old PC

I'm running Mint 15 MATE on an older HP nc6400 laptop, Core Duo 1.86GH, 2GB of RAM w/533MHz bus speed, 120GB hard drive and it runs fast as can be. No problems with it crashing or anything. YouTube runs well, heck, anything I want to do runs well. I'd check over your hardware or do a reinstall so yo...

Re: Mint's Relationship with Ubuntu

^Ditto, Ubuntu is it's self a variation of Debian so they'd be hypocrites by trying to stop someone else from using their Distro as a basis for another one.

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I'm also coming over to Linux from Mac OS X after using it for 11 years. For me starting out with Ubuntu 12.04LTS made it easy to switch over because just like OS X it's an icon based desktop. After a couple months of getting use to using Linux I've moved to Mint 15 with the MATE desktop and I reall...

Point Linux OS vs Linux Mint 15 MATE.

Ok, so I switched from Ubuntu 12.04LTS over to Mint 15 MATE and couldn't be happier. Then I see Robbie Ferguson on Category 5 TV talking about Point Linux OS with the MATE desktop and it looks pretty cool as well. My question is, would there be any advantage to switching to Point Linux over Mint MAT...

Re: Does Linux Mint get made fun of?

Let me put it this way, Darren Kitchens of Hak5 has switched over to Mint(MATE from the looks of it) so if a World Renowned Hacker like him can use it then it must be a dang cool Distro. Case Closed, LOL.

So does no answer mean that the Mint Team hasn't come up with a fix for this issue?

Re: Does Linux Mint get made fun of?

In Psychology you learn that a person can have two things of equal value to choose from. Once that person picks one or the other then the one not picked becomes "junk" and the one picked is "the best" even thought in the real world they're both equal. We always play that little "trick" on ourselves ...

Any progress with "Fan On after Suspend" Bug.

Just wanted to see if they've come up with a fix for this little bug yet? It is kind of annoying to not be able to use suspend because when you wake you're fan will run full speed until you reboot. So, have they figured out a fix for this or no?

Re: Does Linux Mint get made fun of?

I think people complain about Unity because it's Different. My first Linux Distro was Ubuntu 12.04LTS so I had nothing to compare Unity to except Mac OS X(that's TEN, not "EX",LOL) and to me Unity was like OS X in that it was icon based instead of drop down menu like Windows but since I've grown acc...

Re: Does Linux Mint get made fun of?

Personally I'd rather strip down a bloated distro where everything works out of the box than piece together a minimal install for the same result. Ditto. I gave Point Linux Core a look and it was so "bare bones" it couldn't even find my WiFi card. The Full version found it without any problems. Wha...

Re: Linux 13 or 15 for new install/new user?

Since he's running Windows XP I really doubt that he has a UEFI set up so that's not a factor. I've been running Mint 15 MATE and I'm lovin' it. Cinnamon has a bit "newer" look to it but like Xfce, LXDE and IIRC KDE the clock set to Military Time drives me absolute nuts. Yes, there's a way to get it...

Re: Mate vs. Cinnamon

Ok, I'm taking Cinnamon for a little Test Drive via Live USB and I have to say, it DOES look a little more polished. Has a newer look to it, more 3D as opposed to the 2D look of MATE but other then that they seem quite a bit alike. I don't know if it'd be worth changing from MATE to Cinnamon or not,...

Re: Mate vs. Cinnamon

I've been running Mint 15 MATE for a while and I like it. I can find things and do anything that I need to do. Not really bothered looking at Cinnamon, maybe I should download it and make up a "Live" USB to give it a look but really, MATE works for me and I'm happy with it and isn't that what it's a...

Re: Think I might be a Linux Mint convert.

IIRC Raspberry Pi uses XBMC which is the old XBox code. Also, from what I've seen is can use Python as well. I'd like to get a Pi just to mess around with. Heck, $35 bucks for a computer, you just can't beat that deal IMHO.

Re: Think I might be a Linux Mint convert.

I did "stray" from Mint 15 MATE for about a week after hearing about Elementary OS Luna on the Linux Action Show but I reinstalled Mint yesterday because there were just a couple things I didn't like about eOS. You couldn't do ANYTHING on the desktop, couldn't make folders or files and when you inst...

Re: Elementary OS "Luna" may give Mint MATE a run for it's m

My ol' nc6400 only has a 60GB HDD so I don't want to partition it for a dual boot so I just pick the "flavor of the month" and run with it until I get tired of it or find something that runs better. So far I'm lovin' Mint 15 MATE over Ubuntu 12.04LTS but I am giving E-OS a close look. Being a former...

Re: Kids Can't Use Computers... And This Is Why It Should Wo

I learned about computers, well, because I like computers and like to tinker with em'. Same for cars/trucks and firearms. If you're "into" something then you'll generally learn about it, if you're not then you'll just learn enough to get by and that'll be it. I still think anyone who buys a car/truc...

Elementary OS "Luna" may give Mint MATE a run for it's money

Just checked out a "Live" USB download of Elementary OS "Luna" after seeing it reviewed on the Linux Action Show on Jupiter Broadcasting on my Roku2 HD and I have to say, it's looking pretty decent. Reminds me a lot of Mac OS X althought it's NOT an OS X look alike by any stretch of the imagination....
