Re: Continue using manually installed driver

Fixed my issue going to Synaptic Package Manager and searching "fglrx" (thats my driver) and marking for complete removal all the packages that had a green ball, in my case, only "fglrx-core" was enabled. "ubuntu-drivers-common" was left untouched. After marking for complete removal, apply. Then th...

Re: Mint 17 + mdm + user switch + nvidia = Black Screen

...when screensaver goes on, it asks for password for passwordless user and I cant log in - wrong password message, etc... in my [limited] experience, i've had the exact same thing happen. To prevent it, I assign a password to all accounts but then add the users to the nopasswd group. Search the fo...

Re: Day 1 Linux newbie needs help

when I go to the software manager and put in my password, nothing at all happens. sometimes I find that the software manager (as well as some other tools in system options) "pop under" the current window; i.e. they open, but don't get focus, so you have to minimize your current window to see them. ...

Re: Passwords

+1 on enabling auto login +1 on NOT running a desktop as root it might seem like you're entering your password a lot as you get set up, but it's not that much in regular daily use. usually. (I say that not knowing what your daily use entails). just make your password short and easy to type. or you c...

Re: login twice after suspend?

i get the logging in twice thing, but are you sure it's "exactly the same thing" - or is one the MDM login manager (nicer looking screen w/ background) and the other is the session lock associated with the screensaver (black screen except for small window in the middle)? (above descriptions are for ...

if you're an oatmeal fan, I just played "Exploding Kittens" last night with the family - good times!! Recommended. The regular version is kid safe, that's what I have. There's also an NSFW version I haven't (yet...)

I got mine on amazon

Re: Prevent Session Locking

Resurrecting this 1.5 year old thread. Sorry - but it's not only unresolved, but persists into 17.2! I had forgotten all I tried a year and a half ago, and was starting down the same exact path when I found my own thread on a search. -I've added users to nopasswdlogin, which works - no pw prompt upo...

Re: Installation Woes

Do yourself a big favor and bookmark this thread: How to install with manual partitioning xenopeek did an absolutely amazing job addressing exactly your concerns there (no, you're not the first!). I've come back to that thread several times as I've done subsequent installs, branching out into the nu...

Re: Mint 17 + mdm + user switch + nvidia = Black Screen

i've had a gtx 760 in my linux box, and have been suffering through a myriad of freezeups and unpleasantries, holding out for that day when that little version description prophecy "improved compatibility / better support with nvidia cards / drivers" came true. after I had 17.2 freeze up, I gave up....

anybody lightscribe recently?

I don't even know how many years it's been, but a few times I went to the trouble of doing a lightscribe disc, only to dig one out one day and see it horribly faded, almost unreadable (despite my using the heaviest, darkest burn settings.) I haven't touched lightscribe since, and every time I burn a...

renaming partition upon install & preserve files?

currently I have 16 installed, divvied up on my HDD as follows; / swap /home And I've put >500gigs of files in /home I'm about to install 17, and would like to change /home to /data (I'll manually delete the settings files later) and recreate a new /home where I'll only keep the settings files. If I...

Re: I have/like Mint- but...WHY? What was the point??

I consider my computer an appliance, akin to a refrigerator, dishwasher or dryer. I use it to accomplish tasks. I think this approach is most healthy if you find yourself going down the road of comparing Linux to another OS. It's worth re-evaluating exactly what you're trying to do and keeping the t...

first, check out this thread . warning: xenopeek is a beast, so it took me 3 different read-throughs to digest it all. but it's worth it. I feel like I have at least a rudimentary understanding of linux partitioning thanks to that thread. how I do manual partitioning for linux installs: / - for the ...

I think that it should be implemented but I doubt that it will be. Seems like some of the people who make decisions here are way behind the curve. Well I appreciate the backup, Don! :) Sorry to see you take flak for it, I happen to agree with you. There have been many forum advancements since this ...

Re: Forum Suggestion: "liking" individual posts

Unfortunately, too many people don't have similar restraint. This idea was already dismissed on the official Ubuntu Forums, for similar reasons to which I've stated. That's a shame. Curious, too, because I think of this forum as more mature than some of the others that the feature works famously on...
