Basic Questions

I realized I'm at that point where I know enough to really break things and have no idea how to fix them or what went wrong. I'm more comfortable with a terminal but I'm not proficient in the core commands. I have so many questions that google can't answer very well. I want to know more about Linux ...

Re: Loading initial ramdisk ... [Solved]

Ok that was a nightmare but I got my computer working again so I thought I'd document my solution. First I want to say I'm not even sure what was the initial problem, only that my guess was based on it hanging at "loading initial ramdisk ..." updated thread title for better searching. My idea was to...

Re: No boot after XAMPP install

Oh I was just trying to make XAMPP start at boot time as described here , I thought it might be more "proper" than a start-up command. Could I just remove the sym link and the rc.d entry? Suppose I boot from a live USB, how would I apply update-rc.d lampp remove to my original filesystem? Edit: Some...

Loading initial ramdisk ... [Solved]

I'm getting tired of the number of times I've made Linux unbootable. This latest, the last real significant change I made was sudo ln -s /opt/lampp/lampp /etc/init.d/lampp sudo update-rc.d lampp start 80 2 3 4 5 . stop 30 0 1 6 . At present, I get grub so that works, but it hangs on loading initial ...

Re: Flash out of date, Firefox blocking it

Just wanted to add for anyone else having this problem, as I just fixed it myself:

Use Fresh Player instead. It allows you to use Pepper Flash (which is bundled with Chrome) for Firefox too.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install freshplayerplugin

Re: installing programs - where'd they go?

So you're saying the programs exist (you tested them) but they're not showing up in your menu? You basically just want them in your menu, right? You have the option of just doing it manually. From this here you can produce all the commands. If you right-click on your menu and click configure, you ca...

Re: installing programs - where'd they go?

Nemo is the default file manager for Cinnamon. Since most programs have general titles in Linux, it's helpful to go to help->about and it will tell you the program's actual name.

Re: installing programs - where'd they go?

Coming from Windows, I'm still getting used to the file layout—it does take time. I've installed Anki and Xmind from .debs, and both have shortcuts in /usr/share/applications, which is the system-wide folder for installed applications. It's similar to Program Files, but the binaries are stored in an...

Re: System-wide programs no longer available?

Tried that, it just resets to nothing since "nothing" is available.

Could it be something to do with ~/.local/share/applications mime types? I have the file-roller.desktop right there yet it doesn't show up in Open With.

System-wide programs no longer available?

In my "open with..." dialogues and Mint menu, applications such as Archive Manager and GDebi Package Installer are no longer available. I've done too much fiddling in the past few days to remember what I changed; do you know what would cause programs that still exist in /usr/share/applications to st...

Ohhh... thank you, it works! Yes, that makes sense I just didn't know about that. Always learning something new with Linux :)

Thanks again Xenopeek.

17.2 Shortcut Commands

So at the keyboard shortcuts settings, I want to be able to turn my monitors off at a keypress after a delay. The command sleep 1 && xset dpms force off works in terminal as expected, but doesn't execute as a shortcut. If I use ; instead of && , same result. If I only have "xset dpms force off" then...

Dots all over screen ASUS ML228H

I have a debilitating problem on this computer: my screen is blanketed by dots of various patterns, completely random, and they change if I scroll or move windows. I don't believe it's the monitor itself because the monitor's menu appears on top of the dots crystal clear. I have a week old install o...

Administrative Rights Freeze up

Any time I do something that requires a password prompt (Software manager, Update Manager, installing from .deb, etc) my computer completely freezes up for a long time before finally giving me the prompt, after which everything resumes normally. It doesn't freeze if I use sudo. I'm using Mint 16 Cin...

VirtualBox: Copy from Guest to Host (LM 15)

This is my first time using VMs. After installing VirtualBox, dkms, Guest Additions, and reading [url=http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=135307&p=724686#p725762]this[/url] fantastic post (and doing what it says, that is adding the user to the "vboxusers" group and installing the extens...

Re: Desktop will not sleep/hibernate

check some of the BIOS settings. Be sure to turn off WOL, which is Wake On Lan, since any "keep alive" signal may keep waking it back up. Huh. I did not expect such a simple suggestion to solve my problem. I did indeed play around in BIOS; I changed the ACPI Standby State from S1 to S3, which would...

Desktop will not sleep/hibernate [Solved]

Hello, I am running Mint 15 MATE on a desktop, and it will not suspend or hibernate properly. On suspend it will go to a black screen but fail to shut down correctly; the fan and other components still run. I've searched the internet for a solution and it seems to only pertain to laptops. My questio...

Aero Snap MATE

I would like to emulate the Snap feature from windows; I've grown very accustomed to using it. Here's my progress so far: - I've read about and installed Compiz - Added to Commands lines 0, 1, and 2: wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -e 0,0,0,960,1080 wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -e 0,960,0,960,1080 wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -e 0,...
