what does #! mean

In order to run my ruby scripts I found that I had to include #! and then the location of ruby at the top. Does the #! symbol just indicate where the software needed to run my program is? I saw that bash programs begin with #!/bin/bash.

Gnome not working

I just installed Mint. I absolutely love the gnome shell and downloaded it from the software center. That being said, when I try to log in with the gnome shell, all I get is a blank screen. I am using cinnamon. Does gnome work with cinnimon? If so, what might the issue be?

Re: Linux Instilation Partition Issue

administrollaattori's analysis is correct; but I want to add: In the past, I have been able to shrink the windows partition, turn that into a new volume, If you created a new partition for Linux in Windows, that's the original source of the problem; the Windows partitioning tools tend to convert di...

Linux Instilation Partition Issue

I am trying to install Linux mint cinnamon alongside windows 7 so I can dual boot them on my computer. In the past, I have been able to shrink the windows partition, turn that into a new volume, and install mint on it by clicking the option install mint alongside other operating system. Several issu...

Uninstall firefox and ALL ADDONS etc.

When I open addons in firefox, only the addons that I want are there. However in browsing through in the terminal there is a bunch of crap that I don't want such as a bunch of stuff from amazon.com. I also see it flash through various amazon.com/whatevers when loading pages like reddit. I want to re...

Re: How do I downgrade to Mint 14

For Karl's suggestion you'll need to install by using manual partitioning. I have some help for that here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=122276. See the hint at step 4 for the general approach. An alternative is booting from the Linux Mint installation ISO and deleting the existi...

How do I downgrade to Mint 14

My internet, apparently due to the driver for my wireless hardware, is very buggy in Mint 15. Apparently it's a known bug, and it works fine in previous versions of Mint. I am running a Linux Windows 7 dual boot, and I don't have a windows cd to mess with the master boot record. I also don't have a ...

How do I add music to the login screen?

I have been playing with the login screens and loving them, but they are a bit too quiet. Is it possible to in some way add music that starts as soon as the login screen opens and stops when I log in? If there is no established way, how would I go about figuring out how to do this, and how difficult...

Re: Why are these installed and should I be concerned

So new development. I looked up some bash commands and did this. locate amazon > cat amazon.txt (This created a file called cat, to my surprise, but it had all the data. rm -r $(<cat) This attempted to remove each of the files on the list recursively. For each file it said file not found. I found th...

How do I remove all files and directories with a key word

So rm permanently deletes files, right? Is there a way to remove all files with a certain keyword from my system all at once? For example, rm everything (files and directories) with the word amazon? Not sure how to mark this as solved, but I solved it. This is how: locate term > cat rm -r $(<cat)

Re: Why are these installed and should I be concerned

How do I get rid of them all then? I looked in my firefox addons and there is no mention of anything related to amazon.com. Can I just use rm (I think that's the command) and remove the directories?

Why are these installed and should I be concerned

The reason that I chose mint over Ubuntu was because of the ubuntu spyware concern (Yes, I know I can just turn the monitoring thing off). Anyways, I am reading a book about how to use mint, and I was reading a section about the locate command when something about google popped up. I started browsin...

Re: Strange wireless problem Mint 15 (still not solved)

Very much appreciated!

Before I do this, is there a way to save the state of my OS so I can undo the changes that I made? If not, are there directions to undo the changes that I made in case this doesn't work out?
