Re: Connect to Mint 18.3 remote desktop

@smurphos

I think its just the basic Mint Mate manager and it happens at the login prompt..basically when X closes... whether you reboot to the login screen or it times out inactivity and dumps to login..
I tried just running the apps over SSH and that worked, I can deal with that :)

Re: Connect to Mint 18.3 remote desktop

@smurphos

I SSH'd in, started the server with the code, then connected locally via localhost and still got the black screen because the server was at the login screen. Mint Mate relatively latest version and patches.. Im just about to give up on this one...

Re: Connect to Mint 18.3 remote desktop

Ive been stumped by this for 2 days now. You can connect with the default Vino VNC server if you enable it and disable the encryption (search for that). You can also connect with x11vnc, tigervnc, tightvnc, and others. I had RealVNC which worked until they went to subscription only model. Unfortunat...

Re: Why use linux

There is no definitive answer as to why to use Linux. It is completely subjective. There are as many reasons to use Linux as there are to use Windows and vice-versa. At some point you have to decide what is important to you. What it is that makes a difference to you. Is it security, is it community,...

Re: disquieting news about sourceforge?

Sad day indeed. I used to trust them and now I will be hesitant to get anything from them. Once you go to the dark side like this, it is usually a downward spiral unless someone really puts on the brakes and turns it around.

Re: Windows in Virtualbox

I think there are two options here.. you can try it in VirtualBox and depending on how heavy the applications are and how beefy the machine is that may be fine, or you might want to try the dual boot thing and boot to Windows for the necessary evils and Linux for everything else if VirtualBox dosent...

Re: How do you use linux?

I have a laptop I do most of my heavy work and fun with that I loaded Mint on about 3 years ago and never looked back. I do web development and such there. It has been through Cinnamon/KDE and back again but always stayed Mint. I also have an android tablet for lighter things.. and an android phone ...

Re: Setting up as web server

I am not a Mint wizard although I have been in it for a while now. I am also a web developer. Before Mint, I was in windows and happily used WAMP as my dev environment locally and then uploaded when I was done. I tried for about a month to find something remotely similar in Mint and gave up. The ans...

Re: Wanted: Linux success stories

For those with relatively (last 3-4 years or newer) PC's and especially laptops, quite often the manufacturer wont provide rescue disks but will leave a restore partition hidden on the hard drive. For Asus, you press F9 on boot, other mfg will differ. It will wipe the C drive and start you from fact...

Automate file sync and/or backup suggestions?

I have a laptop with Mint on it which I use to develop websites and whatnot. I also have a Vista machine I use as a media server, file share, etc.. I would like to keep my work folder tree backed up on the Vista machine as it has a Terabyte drive on it. I do mount the vista machine in Mint, so it is...

Re: ExtremeTech Article: Linux’s Worst-Case Scenario

I just hope the hactivists keep up and have some bios flashes once that lock down day comes because, if the only option is to "secure boot" then that is the door closing on the computing kingdom.

Using a PC regardless of the OS isn't the answer for some people. Straight jackets and slingshot feedings are sometimes the only answer. :mrgreen:

Re: Wanted: Linux success stories

A year or so ago, I had a friend who bought a mini-pc from a flea market. It was the cutest little box I had seen in a while. Unfortunately, the hard drive was wiped clean, as I would have as well, and it was basically useless. You've got 2 choices I told her.. go and spend $100 on windows, or I can...

Re: Do Linux pcs Slow down with time like Windows pcs?

Ive found that in general, windows PC's slow down over time because every damn thing you do wants to load on boot and live as a system tray icon, a startup program or a service. Also the registry ends up being a complete cluster after a while since every installed program drops a jillion keys in the...

Re: Mate or Cinnamon; which one is more safe to use online?

Browsing habits, what extensions/plugins are enabled in the browser, what scripts are allowed to run in said browser, the user's susceptibility to falling prey to phishing, etc have far far more to do with online safety than the individual desktop does or would. ^^^^^THIS^^^^^ I am a windows tech v...

An Observation

I recently reloaded and upgraded to 17.1 and said gimme everything including all the 5's and 4's in the update manager. I figured..wth.. its a fresh install I can just redo it if it freaks... I was on 17 with KDE and went 17.1 Cinnamon this time, its an Asus laptop. Last night I fell asleep and the ...
