Re: Keyboard stops responding randomly

edit: found out what triggered the keyboard unresponsiveness..

Can you explain what it was and how you fixed for others who might encounter the same problem? Also, be sure to mark the topic with a [SOLVED] tag.

Re: What's wrong with my CPU?

By high-pitched sound, do you mean an electronically-produced tone, or something mechanical? If the former, it probably means your CPU is overheating and the computer is shutting down to keep it from damaging itself. It's most likely overheating now when it didn't before because dust has accumulated...

Re: Isadora won't boot. Monitor says "no signal"

Looks like X is attempting to load the proprietary nvidia driver. Are you using an nvidia graphics card? Have you installed the official nvidia drivers? At any rate, you should be able to get back to your graphical desktop by (at least temporarily) using a different driver. From the terminal, do: cd...

Re: No sound from internal speaker and cursor issue

⋅ Logout. ⋅ Once you're at the login screen, press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a terminal (you can press Ctrl-Alt-F8 to return to the login screen at any time) ⋅ Log in to the terminal using your normal username and password. ⋅ Kill pulseaudio again, only this time...

Re: No sound from internal speaker and cursor issue

Try the following in a terminal: killall pulseaudio sudo modprobe -r snd-hda-intel sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel See if your speaker works after those three commands complete successfully (if you get no output, they worked). The second one may say the module is in use. If so, try quitting programs tha...

Re: Where can I find an overview over running processes? [SO

You can also type "top" in a terminal to see the most processor-intensive jobs. Also in a terminal, "ps -aux | less" will give you a snapshot of all running processes. You can do "killall [name]" to end a process.

Re: Isadora won't boot. Monitor says "no signal"

EDIT: Oops, looks like you found an easier way while I was typing! Can you post your xorg log file? It's probably located at /var/log/Xorg.1.log. Ignore the rest of this post :P Looks like you need to boot from the live CD and edit you /etc/default/grub file as oobetimer suggested. See https://help....

Re: Isadora won't boot. Monitor says "no signal"

Do not boot from a CD. Take the CD out and boot normally until you get to the GRUB screen (the one that lists all your operating systems--it'll say "LinuxMint", "LinuxMint (recovery mode)", etc). Add "nomodeset" to the line that starts with "vmlinuz" (or simil...

Re: No Bell on Helena

I like the pcspkr because I often have audio coming from another machine and it's nice to have that feedback constantly. Seems like they should put it in some obvious preference menu, like, say, Audio :/

Anyhoo, problem's still not solved. I'll be grateful for any more advice :)

Re: No Bell on Helena

Ah! That was indeed an issue. I commented out the line with a "#" and rebooted. Now when I do "lsmod | grep spkr" I get: pcspkr 2332 0 In spite of that, I still don't have a bell :( [EDIT] After some googling, I checked and confirmed in gconf-editor that /apps/metacity/general/au...

No Bell on Helena

Hello! I just upgraded to Helena and I have lost my terminal bell. It was working fine on Gloria. I found this thread where someone else was having the same problem, but it was unresolved. I get no output from "lsmod | grep spkr". EDIT: I didn't upgrade, actually, I did a clean install but...

Re: Poll: How do you use Linux Mint?

I have a Mac and a PC connected with Synergy that both get equal use. I can't really say I have a definite main computer since it pretty much feels like I'm using a single computer. I need my Mac for certain things. The PC was originally built for gaming, so of course I had Windows on it, XP in my c...

Re: Need a prime sketch-drawing software...

Quark Xpress is a desktop publishing program, not really for sketching or diagrams. Its equivalent on linux is Scribus. It's in the repositories. For artistic drawing, there's GIMP for raster art and Inkscape for vector art. Again, both in the repositories. I can't help with diagram software. Not en...

Re: Frequent freezes; fglrx/video/graphics?

Well it turns out that, in addition to my driver issues, I had some bad memory! Several errors in just the first minute of memtest--yikes. Thankfully I had a spare module lying around and it survived 7 passes. I haven't done much testing with both of these issues fixed, but I feel quite confident th...

Re: Frequent freezes; fglrx/video/graphics?

Thanks for your reply! I guess MESA is in the repositories? I'll probably do a clean mint install and get MESA straight away. Despite my high-end graphics card, I don't really care about 3D. All I want is a stable system! And no, I'm not angry at anyone, least of all the mint team. I'm just happy I ...

[SOLVED] Frequent freezes; fglrx/video/graphics?

Hello! Just (re)installed mint with the plan of using it as my primary OS, but I've run into a bit of a hitch. It freezes fairly regularly, often when doing something related to graphics, such as watching a video or drawing. Every time it crashes I have to hard reset; even REISUB doesn't work. Anyho...

Can't access iTunes DAAP shares [RESOLVED/UNSOLVABLE]

Hello! First of all, thank you for this beautiful distro. I'm loving it to pieces. Anyway, in RhythmBox I can see all of the shared iTunes libraries on my network in the sidebar, but I cannot access them. I click one, and it highlights, but nothing else happens. I have LM on a very small partition a...
