Mint 18 XFCE not honoring power settings

Set my wifes laptop to turn off the display after x amount of time. However now matter how long I wait, even overnight I find the display still on but with a blank screen. How can I force it to power off the display?

Not sure of model of laptop. Using the Nvidia 340 proprietary driver.

I only use it as an indicator. I use the keyboard to switch desktops. Use 6 on average.

Will pull in a bunch of KDE dependencies and might look a little out of place but will work just fine.

Re: Using rc.local to automate apt-get update & apt dist-upg

Anyway, you should not use dist-upgrade but upgrade. So much this for automated upgrades. dist-upgrade is asking for trouble if you aren't monitoring it. I've run automated upgrades on my laptop every day at 2 am followed by a reboot. Instead of messing with rc.local I instead made a script and gav...

There are a couple things but these days ssds are so well built under normal use will outlive the rest of your hardware. I wouldn't worry about it honestly.

Re: What is Mint's upper limit of RAM?

Hmm, I don't understand something. I looked up Windows 7 Home Premium usable memory amount (because I dual-boot), and the max is 16 gigs (same as my motherboard). Sorry if this is a dumb question but are you saying Linux can use up to 256 TB of RAM? Windows 7 Home Premium has an artificial barrier ...

Re: File permissions on remote machine

Depends on how you are accessing them from a remote machine. My guess is you are using a samba / cifs share. In which case https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch08.html , the section on permissions should advise you properly. If either machine is windows though then it can't understand unix...

{SOLVED} Can't create bridge through Virt Manager

This is what I'm getting. Laptop is Rebecca KDE, server is Ubuntu 14.04.2 Server. Trying to setup a KVM host. Re: Trying to help friend to create TRIM cron job

That guide is 2 years old and very out of date. There shouldn't be a reason for you to mess with any of the /etc/cron* folders. Use sudo to edit the root crontab and set your script to run from there. Also Ubuntu does this automatically once a week. Mint should as well as it is built from Ubuntu. Th...

I had written this for toggling for minecraft, kept tapping touchpad and blasting multiple blocks in creative. Should be easily modified for your system. Map it to a hotkey for quick toggle. Get the info from xinput list #!/bin/bash #Tadaen Sylvermane #mytouchpad #toggle touchpad on and off TPID=$(x...

Re: Multiple IPs one nic

For regular use you cannot set a Nic to multiple IPs that I am aware of. For virtual machines you just create a bridge then set the ip from inside the virtual machine. As far as the /etc/network/interfaces file, it is overridden by the gui network manager. Nothing you do there will work if the DE ne...

Re: How to ping a virtual machine from host

Need to set up a network bridge from host eth0 to the virtual machines. Without the bridge they think they are on entirely different networks. The easiest I find is get yourself a package called virt-manager on the Mint computer. I'm assuming qemu-kvm for the vms. Once it's running and connected to ...

tadaensylvermane, It looks like you're using the wrong positional parameter as that message will result from not including a path. Maybe it should be "$1" :?: Now I feel a fool. Thank you much. Solved. To be clear these were being called with case, so first arg was the function to call. I...

If you are moving to new HD which means fresh install, 15 and 16 are no longer supported. Good time to get 17 and run with it.

Re: I do not like Mint 17...any input?

Firstly, I could not get the damn thing to work with Skype Blame Microsoft for this, not Mint. Mint doesn't make the Skype binary or are they able to fix it when it's broke. I highly recommend Google Hangouts. Skype has always been bad on linux in my experience and only getting worse. Pulse audio.....

Re: Is LM 3 or 4th most popular OS in the World?

Unfortunately since there is no "activation" feature of any distro (red hat excluded but they have sales figures) it is hard to track the current most popular. Distro watch tracks hits, but that doesn't translate to actual downloads, or people using it. Due to bad backup management or just...
