Re: Would you believe

Exploder, exactly what "tweaks" did you make to Cinnamon? What do you recommend to make it run on older hardware? I'd love to have a look at Cinnamon but like so many others, I was told to use Mate or Xfce on my old laptop.

Nothing! Both .deb and snappy package handlers will be available to Ubuntu users and the rest of us downstream. They're only talking about making snappy the "default" one, but the .deb version isn't going away.

Re: What would be a good Linux distro for my old laptop?

I'm on linux mint right now but I'm not happy with it because it just looks ugly. Then stick with what you have and change the way it looks! Whether you're using the Cinnamon, Mate, KDE, of Xfce desktop, everything is completely configurable. Colors, fonts, backgrounds, themes, and behavior are all...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

A friend of a friend wrote this article about why there are so many Linux distros. It's pretty easy for a "typical user" to understand.

Re: Why so serious about GNU/Linux?

I only tried Linux because I had nothing to lose. Windows was crippled and slow, and using my computer was just frustrating me more than helping me. Oh, and all those interruptions! Windows needs this, Windows needs that, please update this, please select that - are you sure? - Please wait (go watch...

If that's all, then just use GIMP to create special wallpaper, login screen, and menu icon with a cool " Xsog's Super Cool Custom Linux " logo and use it on whatever ...

Re: Screenshot works just one time

I use gnome-screenshot and I am offered the option to either capture the entire screen or select an area to grab. Either way it's a one-at-a-time screenshot. Perhaps you have a different screenshot tool in your version of Linux Mint. You can try out a few different ones, like screenshooter and gnome...

Re: 17.1 livecd "mint" user password

Running "Live" is just for test-driving Linux Mint. There is no login, and any changes you make to Mint while running Live (not installed) are not retained once you end your Live session. The only stuff that is saved while running Live is whatever stuff you do online. The reasons for running Live ar...

Re: Downloaded ISO to Disc "I'm trying"

I guess it's just my hardware but about half of the disks I've burned using Brasero don't work. I have alot of very shiny coasters to protect my furniture from hot and cold drinks. Xfburn always works for me, so that's the one I use. But UNetbootin is pretty simple too, and a little faster too. If t...

Re: Need Advice: Reinstall or Dump Linux Mint?

Ark987's advice is good. Sometimes on older machines a new kernel doesn't work as well as an older one. Re-install Linux Mint and don't accept the kernel updates. Levels 1 and 2 updates only! My computer is faster and better using the older kernel that came with 17.1 than it was with the newer kernel.

Re: The myth of the year of the Linux desktop.

The "year of the Linux desktop" was 2014. For me, that is. That's when I first saw it, tried it, then installed and used it. The year I quit using Windows because I didn't need it for school or any of the other stuff I use my computer for. More and more applications are web-based , so it matters le...

Re: Update Levels

Do you know the difference between education and experience? Education is when you read the fine print; experience is what you get when you don't. My daddy is full of "witticisms" about life, and one of my favorites is his definition of the difference between knowledge and wisdom: Daddy says,...

Re: Linux market penetration

I think I agree with those who say that Linux "market share" matters because of the incentive it offers OEMs to write drivers for Linux. There is always alot of talk about free and open-source software and very little about free open-source hardware . A larger Linux "market share" could mean more pr...

"Typical users" don't expect to type commands. Too complicated, that's for experts, I'm no geek, I just want to use my computer the easy way so I can get in touch with Susan. And then Mr. Typical User will click (or -- God forbid -- "touch") his way into Facebook somehow, and once there, he will ty...

Re: How do you use linux?

I use only Linux. I do all my schoolwork on it, e-mail, Facebook and web, listening to music. My brother uses Linux in his Navy job and Windows for the other stuff. My parents "like" my Linux Mint but only use my computer when theirs is updating, "busy," or in the shop getting fixed. I hope they get...

Re: End of support for XP

This was the incentive for my parents to look at alternatives to Windows instead of throwing away a perfectly good computer. I wasn't a Linux Mint user for very long but I was so happy with it that they got interested. They ended up buying new computers anyway but they let me have one of their old o...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

(Linux) has consistently failed to grab the attention of the lucrative home consumer desktop market share because it is perceived as foreign and way too geeky if not downright difficult to learn the mindset. It is an exclusive boys club and both girls and women are not reared to learn GNU/Linux in ...

Re: If not Mint, then...

Probably Voyager, Xubuntu, or LXLE, which might work on my really old PC when Mint 13 Xfce expires. Mint 17 Xfce was too much for my older PC so it runs 13 until - ? Then maybe I'll try LXLE on that one. But Mint 17 Xfce is great on my newer PC!
