Re: Desktop won't start in mint xfce

Yay, it worked. Thanks Karl! For other nubes out there who may be reading this post later, you need to press <Ctrl><Alt><F1> when the computer gets to the normal mint login screen. Also, in my case as a single user on the netbook, the root password was indeed the same as my user password.

Desktop won't start in mint xfce

Hey all, I recently installed Mint Petra XFCE on an ASUS Eee PC netbook. Everything was running fine until I made an addition to the .profile file in my home directory to start dropbox, i.e.: ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd start -i Since then, all I get after log in is a blank screen with a mouse cursor, ...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

OK, here's a final postscript from me, in case anyone reads this thread later to solve their own problems. Mike's suggestion to use the Behringer UFO202 DAC was a winner (thanks Mike!). I've now got nice clean audio from my media players (e.g. VLC) and elsewhere (e.g. youtube). Actually sounds prett...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

Hey Mike, the Behringer UFO202 is a stereo device; if you want 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound it doesn't do that.... I've ordered the Behringer UFO202 and will update the forum on how I went when it arrives in ten days time. I only have stereo speakers, so 5.1 or 7.1 capabilities don't really concern me....

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

I am walking wounded with whooping cough infection so I won't be posting till I get better. This will be my last touching bases on this thread for a long while. OK, hope you get better soon rokyntji, and thanks for your advice. Thanks too to everyone else for your comments. I think I've come to a b...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

OK, I've had a little win. I updated my linux kernel from 3.8.0 to version 3.9.4, and now alsamixer works! Also, the following commands now makes a hissing sound: aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav speaker-test -c 2 I can also see Digital Output (S/PDIF) and Analogue Output in my Sound app, inst...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

I've just tried reloading my alsa system as per http://itsfoss.com/fix-sound-ubuntu-1304-quick-tip/ sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio sudo alsa force-reload Then I rebooted, crossed my fingers, but still no luck. My system still can...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

Hey rokytnji, still no luck I'm afraid. I made the three "false" --> "true" edits that you suggested in the asound.state file. I didn't make any more such changes as there were plenty of other "false" entries and I wasn't sure which ones to edit. I noticed incidentally ...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

Wow, thanks for the detailed instructions. I've got nothing to lose here, so I'll go the 'reckless linux' route 8)

Will have a crack at it tomorrow when I got some time. Thanks again!

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

Hey Mike, I think generally it is better to review what we can run Linux on All I can say is that you guys are very tolerant and patient. I realise that linux only makes up a small segment of the market, but I still think it sucks that a company as big as ASUS can't even bother to make any effort in...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

Hey rokytnji, The speaker-test was a no-go. I didn't hear anything coming out of them during the test. I hadn't added my user name to the sound group, but have done so now, and logged off and back on. However, the speaker-test still doesn't work. Here's my report on your other checklist items. Termi...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

Hi Rokytnji, I'm afraid using sudo didn't work: sudo alsamixer cannot open mixer: No such file or directory I did a search through my file system to just confirm that alsamixer is really there: $ sudo find / -name 'alsamixer' 2>/dev/null /usr/bin/alsamixer Here are the outputs for the other tests yo...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

Hey Nomko, thanks for the tip about installing the Realtek drivers, but still not there yet ... In case anybody else is following this sometime later, the Realtek Readme.txt instructions had an error in them. Step 2 should include the bolded step: Step 2. Complied source code a. cd alsa-driver-1.0.x...

Re: ASUS officially don't support linux

OK, the boycott idea was probably a bit of an over reaction, but I am still pissed at ASUS for not even trying. Surely an international organisation of that size can maintain some linux support? Anyway, this princess won't help my problem. So here is the output of inxi -Ax as requested: Audio: Card-...

Re: Intel's X79 and the 2011 Processor

Hi Nick, I'm running Mint 15 on a P9X79-Pro motherboard with a i7-3930K processor, and AM having problems. The audio is choppy and the system is constantly flickering between the speakers and headset, which is still unresolved. When I contacted ASUS about this, this is the response I got: Thank you ...

ASUS officially don't support linux

Hey all, I recently bought a PC with an ASUS P9X79 Pro motherboard which I'm using as a dual boot system for Linux Mint 15 and Win 7. Win 7 runs fine on this system, but I've had audio problems on the linux Mint side. The sound output is choppy, and in the sound panel, the headphones indicator is co...

Re: Driver Manager is blank in Mint 15 Cinnamon

Hey, I have the same problem, I'm just getting a blank list in the driver manager panel. I've had to re-install Mint 15 a couple of times and noticed that this problem only comes up if I open the Driver Manager after I do system update. It worked fine the first time when I dived straight in to the ...
