Re: Bluetooth Support

But rebooting and then running

Code: Select all

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
worked, so I guess this is on the right track. Thanks!

Bluetooth Support

In Mint 16, I had bluetooth working. It was occasionally flakey, but mostly worked as expected. In Mint 17, I can't get it to work at all (same hardware). I read in the Mint 17 XFCE release notes that bluetooth wasn't supported out of the box and that I should install blueman. I did that, and bluema...

Re: Have you found an effective alternative to Remmina?

My work-around is that if Remmina is having a bad day and I'm pressed for time, I can use my Windows box. Not what you (or I) are looking for, but.

Interesting. I recently upgraded from Mint 16 to Mint 17 and I'm definitely experiencing dramatically more problems with my touchpad.

Yeah, five years is great. Even two years would be OK. Six months is a bit short unless you had unmet needs with the prior version.

Re: I have/like Mint- but...WHY? What was the point??

I run all 3 OSes -- I have a MacBook air, this laptop (HP laptop running Mint 17), and a desktop PC running Windows 7. I like all 3 platforms in different ways. Linux tends toward a simpler aesthetic that pleases me, I'm an emacs user and it works best on *nix, and I've always liked using the shell....

Re: Linux Distros with better upgrade systems?

Thanks to those who took the time to point to alternatives -- I was unaware that 17 was LTS, so I'm trying that for the moment. And my apologies for being irritable; if I had taken the time to explain what I was looking for more clearly, I would have been more likely to get good advice. I do still t...

Sorry I asked, it was a real (if irritated) question. If you don't mind spending time on version releases, great for you.

Backing things up and replacing them takes time. Re-installing customizations takes time. Pass.

Linux Distros with better upgrade systems?

I've decided that I'm tired of Mint's approach to upgrades, which is, to say the least, painful. It just isn't worth it to me. Is there a good linux for people who want either stability or easy in-place upgrades? Or is Windows my best bet? (No, I'm not incompetent; I make my living as a software eng...

Re: emacs 24 source?

Never mind, found it in emacs24-el (you have to install the .el files separately). That kind of space savings made sense... in 1995. In the current era, it's retarded.

emacs 24 source?

I installed emacs. The editor works fine, but when I look in /usr/share/emacs/24.3/lisp, I only see the compiled elisp files -- is it possible to install the sources? (I've used the Windows version for years, and it comes with sources...)

Re: Virtualbox on Petra (Mint 16)

I'm aware of the Guest Additions (at work I use Virtualbox on Windows all the time), but I haven't been able to get it to work in the target environment. That's why I asked in the first place, sorry. Is anyone actually doing this? I don't need a theoretical answer. (No offense intended, but I am loo...

Epson Artisan 837 on Mint Petra: Installer Hangs

OS: Mint Petra with Cinnamon. The printer in question is the Epson Artisan 837. It's a network printer and the "Add Printers" dialog discovers it fine. It offers drivers, but when I attempt to install them, it hangs (freezes). Suggestions? I tried CUPS, but it didn't list the 837 model and I haven't...

Virtualbox on Petra (Mint 16)

I'm running what I think is the stock 4.2x version of virtualbox on Petra. The host has Cinnamon installed; the guest is Petra XFCE. (Cinnamon has issues when run as a guest.)

I can't get copy/paste to work between guest and host. Is there something obvious I'm missing, or a known work-around?

Yeah, I can do that now. I'd rather not have to click on my identify first, is all.

Frustrating. But thanks.

Lock Time

It seems that if I leave the laptop idle a short time (10 minutes?) it locks. I tried changing the screensaver timeout to 30 minutes, but it hasn't had any obvious effect.

What do I need to do to tweak the time before it locks the screen?
