Re: Data mount

Firstly, thank you to all who responded so promptly and provided so much explanation. As was said, it was my foolish oversight not reformatting the data partition from FAT. Secondly, sorry for the delay in closing this; my intention was to back up everything and reformat but one thing after another ...

Re: Data mount

Thank you but I am not clear about this yet. This is what I have used for years with many different installations where sda4 was the relevant data partition as identified by gparted: /dev/sda4 /home/terry/Data ext4 auto, users,rw,noexec, noatime, nobh 0 2 I first assumed that replacing sda4 with nvme0n...

Data mount (SOLVED)

I have just installed Mint 21 in a new system using an NVMe SSD and have all data in a separate partition. I want on startup to mount that data partition in a folder in Home named Data. For years, with sda/sdb/etc partitions, I have done that with a line added to fstab (provided by this forum) but t...

Re: No ethernet

Thank you for the prompt reply. It is as you said. I firstly tried installing Win10 and then even Win11 but both gave the same result of stalling at the network connection point. So I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 22.04 and that was immediately successful. I think I will have to stay on it for now...

No ethernet (SOLVED)

I have built a new PC with a Gigabyte Intel Z690 motherboard. I installed Mint 20.3 from USB but find that there is no ethernet connection either from the live USB system or after installation. In many installations of Mint over the years I have never had such a problem, where the live disk would no...

Re: Thunderbird limited SOLVED

Thank you, it is clearly the reason. Although I have received occasional informatory emails about Firefox from Mozilla, I had not had notification of these changes, nor did I discover the info when I looked at the Thunderbird site. So thank you again for the prompt response.

Thunderbird limited SOLVED

Some weeks ago, on Mint 20.1 Ulyssa the Thunderbird app changed (deteriorated) in two ways. Firstly all folder icons became blank, uncoloured. Secondly a new Write message page only allows for one each of main addressee, Cc and Bcc, a serious restriction. I tried an uninstall and reinstall Thunderbi...

Re: Installing with EFI problem

pebcak wrote: Wed Nov 25, 2020 1:53 pm Did you point the installer to use the partition as EFI system partition (that is to mount the partition at /boot/efi)?
Oh dear, how silly it must appear but that didn't occur to me and I had never noticed that selection. All going well now so grateful thanks for your prompt response.problem

Installing with EFI problem (SOLVED)

Over the years I have installed a large number of Mint systems, on HDs and SSDs without a problem simply because it always worked. It was usually 4 primary partitions, OS1, OS2, swap, Data. Now I am trying to install LM20 onto a new pc, on an M2 drive, and get a warning from the installer that "...

Re: Firefox/Thunderbird failure (Resolved)

Yesterday I rebooted several times trying to clear the problems but without change. This am on start-up there were more updates so installed those first then tried the 2 problem ones left previously and they went in OK. After that both Firefox and Thunderbird were OK. Strange!

Firefox/Thunderbird failure (Resolved)

After recent Mint 19.1 updates my Firefox and Thunderbird are in serious trouble. Firefox will not play YouTube videos but crashes the tab every time. Restoring the tab brings it up again but it continues to fail. If I close Firefox it will on reopening say it had crashed on closure and needs to rec...

Re: (SOLVED) Multiple start options

I said previously that choosing Advanced options on the start screen allowed me to correct the start choice so that only the current installation (Mint 19) was displayed but that the start up time was unchanged at over two minutes. While appreciative of the suggestions, after some thought I decided ...

Re: Multiple start options (SOLVED)

Thank you. It is an old Phoenix BIOS system. I think it must have picked up the other Mint installations on the SSD I connected before deleting the partitions on it and reformatting. Reading your response I was reminded to run Advanced options > Grub which thankfully has corrected the start up scree...

[SOLVED] Multiple start options

I am running a Mint 19 system. I recently connected an SSD and reformatted it to use for data. However, it previously had some old Mint multi-booted systems on it which seemed to have corrupted my start-up choice. The start-up splash screen now offers me a choice of several Mint systems, and a very ...

Re: Scanning with HP Envy 5644 (SOLVED)

Thanks for the response. For me with a new model HP printer the web advice was clear in recommending the new driver and providing the download. However, your comment about the pop-up and a notification area icon puzzled me because when I installed the printer I had no such options. Nor do I have any...

Re: Disc space (SOLVED - mostly)

Just to say thanks for the help. As expected, deleting the Cache.Trash files freed up the 2.7 GB wasted space so user is happy, even though we don't know what created them.

Scanning with HP Envy 5644

Fairly recently I installed a new printer-scanner, connected by wi-fi, on a Mint 17.3 system. It has been printing OK with the standard driver which is hpcups 3.15.2. However, the Simple Scan app does not recognise the printer. HP's helpful website (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.htm...

Re: Disc space

Thank you morenejo. Just now, I'm not sure about the Home size but installation was into just over 15 GB and a basic installation takes only some 5-6 GB and as all data is in a separate partition, albeit mounted in Home, I didn't expect a problem. The Thunderbird folder itself (.thunderbird) appears...

Re: Disc space

Thank you Pjotr for your quick reply. The recommended pages are most interesting but I could not find help for my particular two questions which relate specifically to Thunderbird's use of .Cache. Maybe it is not a Linux Mint problem but a Mozilla one? However, before going to the Mozilla Thunderbir...

Disc space (SOLVED - mostly)

I am trying to help my sister who lives overseas with her Mint installation which I built some years ago and now updated to 17.3 MATE. It was installed into a 15 GB partition with a separate data partition mounted in Home. Recently she has been getting a warning of low disc space when downloading ev...
