Re: Scanning with HP Envy 5644 (SOLVED)

Thanks for the response. For me with a new model HP printer the web advice was clear in recommending the new driver and providing the download. However, your comment about the pop-up and a notification area icon puzzled me because when I installed the printer I had no such options. Nor do I have any...

Re: Disc space (SOLVED - mostly)

Just to say thanks for the help. As expected, deleting the Cache.Trash files freed up the 2.7 GB wasted space so user is happy, even though we don't know what created them.

Scanning with HP Envy 5644

Fairly recently I installed a new printer-scanner, connected by wi-fi, on a Mint 17.3 system. It has been printing OK with the standard driver which is hpcups 3.15.2. However, the Simple Scan app does not recognise the printer. HP's helpful website (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.htm...

Re: Disc space

Thank you morenejo. Just now, I'm not sure about the Home size but installation was into just over 15 GB and a basic installation takes only some 5-6 GB and as all data is in a separate partition, albeit mounted in Home, I didn't expect a problem. The Thunderbird folder itself (.thunderbird) appears...

Re: Disc space

Thank you Pjotr for your quick reply. The recommended pages are most interesting but I could not find help for my particular two questions which relate specifically to Thunderbird's use of .Cache. Maybe it is not a Linux Mint problem but a Mozilla one? However, before going to the Mozilla Thunderbir...

Disc space (SOLVED - mostly)

I am trying to help my sister who lives overseas with her Mint installation which I built some years ago and now updated to 17.3 MATE. It was installed into a 15 GB partition with a separate data partition mounted in Home. Recently she has been getting a warning of low disc space when downloading ev...

Windows expansion - now SOLVED

Since updating Mint 17.1 to 17.2 Rafaela I have a very annoying behaviour of the application windows. Moving them towards one side, especially the LHS, causes them to expand to full screen. I have a 27ins hi-res monitor and usually have two (or more) windows, say Firefox and Thunderbird, open at the...

Re: Administrator quirk (PARTIAL SOLVED)

The change of folder ownership with the Terminal instruction did what was essential, so thanks again. The strange behaviour of opening a page in the browser when trying to oen the folder as Administrator still persists although no longer of concern. However, if anyone can suggest how that can happen...

Re: Administrator quirk

Thank you for the 'work-around', most helpful.

However, if anyone can answer the question of the apparently aberrant behaviour it would be appreciated.

Re: Administrator quirk (PARTIAL SOLVED)

A Mint 17 installation has within a mounted Data partition a folder (call it A) containing other folders (say AA, AB, AC, etc) some of which are locked. The locked ones show the owner as root rather than the user, as expected. To enable the access rights to the locked folders to be changed to the us...

Re: Failure to boot - SOLVED

Thank you guys, you have both helped to resolve this. Unknown to me a second hard drive had been fitted for a back up facility which had changed the hard drive priority order. I guess that with not knowing that, the reported problems with the EFI had misled us.
Thanks again.

Re: Failure to boot

Please can someone look at this again? We have tried again using a newly created Mint 17 USB stick rather than the DVD previously used but the result is the same. The grub error persists and boot up can only be achieved by going into the bios (using the Esc key) and selecting the hard drive. It then...

Re: Failure to boot

Thank you. I have followed this up but not reached a solution yet. To recap on actions taken, I tried it out on my spare computer by first altering the boot so that it failed and reproduced the same error message by using: sudo mv /boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod /boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod.orig I th...

Re: Bootable USB and BIOS problem (SOLVED)

Thank you for the suggestion to try the esc key which did provide boot options on this 5 to 6 years old BIOS system. I had tried all the function keys knowing that one of them usually worked but had overlooked the esc.
Thanks again.

Bootable USB and BIOS problem (SOLVED)

I have made a bootable USB stick with LM17 using linuxliveusb on a Win computer. On 3 of my computers I can force it to boot either by changing the BIOS boot order or using a function key such as F8. However, the type of computer I want it to work on has a slightly older BIOS and I cannot force a bo...

Re: Failure to boot

I'm surprised and disappointed not to receive a suggestion or two. There appear to be many responses about UEFI problems, most of which is beyond me, but as the computer in question has the older BIOS system I assumed none of that would be relevant. Several previous iterations of Mint on that comput...

Failure to boot - SOLVED

A family friend in N.Cyprus runs a triple Mint boot system which I built allowing progressive updates without affecting previous working systems. The PC is a 4 years old Shuttle with a Core2 duo CPU. A month ago I talked him through installing Mint 17 MATE alongside two previous Mint 15 partitions. ...

Re: Date & Time language

Thank you for your prompt response. I have forwarded it on. However, meanwhile I tried it on my spare computer and with English as the main language could not get another on the Date & Time display. It may work the other way, of course, to correct the 'problem' by restoring English throughout. I...
