Re: How often do you change user password

I use the same password for all of my installed distros. Until a year or so back that was a very simple password, then distros started nagging me about the weakness of my password. So, I lengthened and strengthened the password. I'm the only user of my PC so it doesn't much matter. If it is stolen, ...

"Consider recommended packages as dependencies"

I just installed LM20 for testing prior to making it my new daily driver. I'm currently running 19.3. A new install means a lot of boring reinstalling of software for me. I would like to use the Software Manager rather than Synaptic, but I want the "Consider recommended packages as dependencies" opt...

Re: How is linux kernel 5 on linux mint?

I'm running two different installs of mint, one with linux 5.40 and one with 5.4.1. Both are working well on my machine . I don't have a need for this other than my own amusement. I certainly wouldn't install these without a dependable full backup and the knowledge of how to revert to an earlier ker...

I normally use Asunder. It has a GUI and will rip multiple formats. There are many other choices.

Re: Password help

Jeff,

Given that you're using the correct password, perhaps you should try cleaning your keyboard, brushing and blowing it with canned air.

I'd like to second Karichen's suggestion of using the Ubuntu ppa. It worked for me on a new install of 19.2.

Re: ...time for Linux Mint to go. Huh?

Just my two cents. I thought the article had a point. I came to Mint years ago because of the included codecs. For a variety of reasons, I've remained with Mint and been a fan. The Cinnamon desktop, is the biggest of those reasons, and Cinnamon is more important to me than Mint. Wishing Mint w/Cinna...

Re: "Best" file manager

Thank you for this post. It reminded me of the delight in finding a dual pane file manager for Windows 3. Probably, my first custom file manager was Norton Commander, but I settled on PowerDesk. It was a revelation, graphical and full featured dual pane. For years I would bend ears singing it's prai...

Re: grub 2

The first step is to backup any file that you wish to change. After that, Bruno's way will allow you to select the first entry displayed in the grub menu. If you want something more, I would suggest that you build your menu in /etc/grub.d/40_custom . I wouldn't use Grub Customizer. I have tried it ...

Re: Plank bug in Mint 19 cinnamon 64bit?

I had an initial issue with this plank and kernel. Plank wouldn't save appearance settings.

I solved it by using a 5 second delay in plank's startup.

I've no reason to think that will fix your issue, but you've nothing to lose by trying it.

Re: How to Fine Tune Dual-boot grub menu in Mint 17?

I'm not sure what you're missing about item #3. All you need to do is to look the file up as root in the file manager, right click and select properties and make sure the executable flag is off. This can also be done on the command line. After making the change, run "sudo update-grub". My grub menu ...

Re: How to Fine Tune Dual-boot grub menu in Mint 17?

Item #1 - I have no idea why the bios hangs. Item #2 - If you are talking about the amount of time before the default OS is selected, that setting is controlled by the file /etc/default/grub. Item #3 - The MemTest options are inserted by the file /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen. They may be removed by maki...

I too have seen Thunderbird tell me to update. I thought that they said it was a security issue. So, I've been checking software update for the past two days.

I hope a security update doesn't have to wait 2-3 weeks.

Re: Lacking Download Progress Window

Thank you, Neil. I did have the "Navigation Toolbar" hidden. I found the "little indicator" and moved it where I wanted it. I'm a little unsure that all's well. A little indicator is a bit different from the window and progress bar I seem to remember. Still, I'm satisfied for the moment. If everythi...

Lacking Download Progress Window - SOLVED

Suddenly, I seem to be missing a download progress window. You know, a window with a progress bar or percentage indicator. I'm running 16 with the latest cinnamon and firefox. Downloads are still working, but I've no idea how much longer that new distro's iso will take to arrive.

Any ideas?
