What To Do With These Upgrades

My Update Manager is showing three level four updates and the upgrade box is not checked. They are ndiswrapper, linux-firmware and linux kernel 4.13.0-32.35-16.04.1. Why aren't these marked to install and why do I need to see them if I don't need to install them?

Re: Mint 18 Bluetooth Not Working

Starting the service was helpful, tho I don't understand why. I have used Mint since version 15 and never had to do that before. This activated the hot-key combination that turns on BT on my laptop. However, I still have to manually connect to my speaker, and worse yet, when I play an audio file, it...

Mint 18 Bluetooth Not Working

Yesterday I tried using my Bose SoundLink Mini Speaker. This speaker worked well with Mint 17. This time I got the error message the bluetooth adapter couldn't be found. I did a search and found that I needed to install blueman and uninstall whatever was there. This software started up and paired wi...

Re: Online Backup

Where do I find out how to do that? I installed Back in Time and plugged in my new 4 TB USB drive. I ran BIT (root) and got it to take a snapshot which took less than 2 seconds. So I seriously doubt I have backed up 72+ GB of stuff. JC PS: Ignore the sig; I am running Mint 18.3. I'll get it changed.

Online Backup

For several years now we have been using Crashplan, a subscription service, to back up or home computers. CrashPlan has decided to no longer support home service. I know we can backup to an external drive, but that means setting a schedule and, at our age, trying to remember to perform the task. CP ...

Re: Toshiba wifi

Thanks for the info. Apparently this laptop is old enough it won't see a 5G signal. Thank you everyone for your time and your help.

Re: Toshiba wifi

I understand the frequency. All I'm asking is "can this model Toshiba receive that frequency?". I don't know where to find that info. As I said, the cable connection is getting 16 mb/s. I would think it should be a little higher, but probably not 20.

Toshiba wifi

My wife's Toshiba Satellite P755-S5320 is running very slow wifi. My first question is: can this laptop connect to a 5G wifi router? Both our laptops are running Mint 17.3 History. We have been connected to a DSL line which we were paying for a 12 mb/s connection. According to speedtest.net we were ...

Re: Best Method to Install 18.1 - SOLVED

I was hoping I wouldn't have to so that but it makes sense. I'll put it off til I have time to figure out what I'll need to re-install/restore or what have you if I do a fresh install. Thanks for your help everyone.

Best Method to Install 18.1

It seems like I installed the upgrade to Mint 17.3 by going thru a menu selection in Update Manager. Is it possible to upgrade to 18.1 the same way?

Re: Organizer for Kindle Books

Good news ... Bad news

The good news is I found the software I was looking for.

The bad news is it was an app on my old kindle that apparently is not available on my new kindle.

Sorry I bothered everyone.

Organizer for Kindle Books

A few years ago I had some software that runs on a laptop that downloaded my library from my connected Kindle and allowed me to organize my books by placing them on shelves designated by me. Probably due to age, I cannot remember the name of this software. I installed Calibre because that name sound...

Re: Quick Format for a USB Drive

Depends: libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a (>=1:2.24.0) but it is not installable Any idea which repository to add? How does one determine that answer? You should not have to add any repository. libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a is in the "main" section. In Software Sources, click "Restore the default settings" Did that. Didn't h...

Re: Quick Format for a USB Drive

Things are looking better. I got Mint 18 installed on my flash drive and it boots up. Also, I put my software sources back the way they were. At least I think I did. And now gparted shows up in synaptic package manager to be installed. It still won't install because a dependency can't be found due t...

I think I got changed to a different mirror. When I update, I still get the error at the bottom of the list. Still can't find gparted.

Re: Quick Format for a USB Drive

Have you tried a different mirror for Base/ (trusty) in software sources? Depends on your location--but if you have Restored to default it should be good to go. If you have your install .iso medium you could boot into that and load Mint in the live mode. Gparted should already be in the live mode M...
