Re: Strange update errors

It is amazing how quickly things change in the world of computing. Last night I was all for ditching Mint as it was virtually unusable. I thought I would give it one more chance, so, as it was utterly impossible to connect to any update repo by any means at all from within Mint itself, I tried an up...

Re: Strange update errors

Just wanted to say HI! to an old forum friend... Very much appreciated, glad to know you are still around. Back to the problem I was reporting. First, I was wrong, it has nothing to do with linux-firmware. After downgrading that piece of software the situation returned to normal for about 24 hours ...

Re: Strange update errors

Thanks for the answers. I do use iwlwifi or rather I would do if I were connecting through wireless, but I am not, I am connecting through ethernet so it is difficult to explain whey iwlwifi would make a difference to that. In the end I will probably find out that it is some random error that has no...

Strange update errors

I haven't been around for a while, that is because I am not using Mint that much any more, although I still have it installed (mint17) and still keep it updated, and it is about this that I want to warn you. A recent update affected me in the most peculiar manner. I could no longer use Frefox, I cou...

Re: My sources file is empty

bash: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list: No such file or directory' Well now you know the cause of your problem. I would suggest you look in System Settings/Software Sources and see what is set in there. I repeat the caveat though that I know nothing whatsoever about KDE, i...

Re: My sources file is empty

For reasons known only to themselves the MInt team decided to confuse their users by moving the official sources to: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list Look inside that (it is a file not a folder) and see what you have. I don't use KDE though so it might be different.

Re: Wireless hard blocked - bcm43142

Sadly the 3.11 kernel is that latest kernel that Mint uses. It is possible to go to kernel.org download the latest (3.13) kernel but you will have to compile it yourself and really you don't want to go there. However, if your suspicion is correct that you don't have the 43142 driver then you can get...

Re: Wireless hard blocked - bcm43142

Maybe this is the answer, it is pretty long winded though: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/577114/comments/31 BTW it is for the S10 so I don't know if it is good for your machine. Edit2. But I found this as well and that is about your machine: The next gotcha I ran into was that...

Sadly the OP did not get it solved, so maybe there is something about Lenovo hardware that Linux doesn't like :(

Re: Grub boot repair install failure

Sorry, I'm new to all of this. How do I move the backup GPT table to the end of the disk, and would I need to disable SecureBoot then? How do I do that? Thank you :) Well I am very much not new to all this, and I wouldn't try it, but if you have a particular hatred for the computer you are using an...

Re: 64bit but read not all the RAM

Well the usual problem is that all hardware manufacturers cheat by assuming there are 1000Mb in 1Gb whereas in fact there are 1024Mb. In my case my 6Gb of RAM are shown as 5.7Gb in system settings for that reason, although in your case the 700Mb discrepancy looks a little too large to be caused by t...

Yes I have tried alsamixer too. Everything there is all the way up.

It doesn't matter if everything is turned all the way up, if it says MM at the bottom the channel is muted whatever your other volume indicators think.

Re: Mint 16 trying to boot as Ubuntu 13.10

I don't know what to say. Pretty obviously you did something during the day that didn't take effect until after you had switched off for the night. Only you can guess what that might be. As the warning message mentioned themes does that mean you were playing around with bootloader themes? If you hit...

No, nobody has ever had a problem like that before: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=77596&hilit=ubuntu+mint#p451198 Mind you, even if you had found that, it wouldn't have done you any good because it never got solved and it was about a live cd of Mint 11 not an installation ...

I think this might be what you want, although the naming conventions make it as obscure as they possibly can so I can't be 100% sure: http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/openjdk-7-jre The architecture specific packages are at the bottom of the page, but all the little red dots above them are dependenci...

Re: Linux and Windows file sharing Without using Samba

The post you attached this answer to was entitled 'File Sharing Using Samba' therefore your 'non-samba' reply was off topic.

However it is a perfectly reasonable solution to file sharing problem so it now has its own topic.
