Hi silverpuma
Congratulations. Maybe Slitaz would even be the ideal operating system with only 16 GB of storage space.
Thanks. It's not too bad as I have 16 GB left "after" I installed Linux Mint. And so far Mint is working great.

Re: Will my Hp Stream Laptop run a VM?

Sucess!!!! I installed gnome boxes and it worked straight away. Tried it with with a few lightweight distros and the last one "Slitaz" see image below. All runs slow but with my horse and cart laptop its more than I could expect so very happy.

Re: Will my Hp Stream Laptop run a VM?

Just a thought anyone used gnome boxes or qemu? I'm going to try virtualbox now as well but it does look a bit daunting for me.

Re: Will my Hp Stream Laptop run a VM?

That's a rather puny laptop, that Stream. Can't argue with that  The only good thing with this baby laptop was, once win10 started to load up with updates my laptop became so full even after a fresh install it was a snail so I was pushed to Linux. And that's been a really rewarding move. I th...

Larger SSD maybe?
It's more than likely a soldered-in-place eMMC, not an SSD.

[SOLVED] Will my Hp Stream Laptop run a VM? [SOLVED]

Hi Folks, a Linux newbie here. I have an underpowered hp stream 14" laptop with 4g ram and 16.4 GB HD. I don't use the laptop for anything other than web browsing and learn Linux so I don't need any of the remaining 16GB of HD for storage. I have never used a VM before but would like to try a handfu...

Re: How to shorten my name in the Terminal

I want to use my username "silverpuma" but can I edit the "silverpuma-HP-Stream-Laptop-14-ax0XX" after the "@" sign? Yes. That part's the system's hostname and is easily changed as, e.g., hostnamectl set-hostname laptop Exit and relaunch a terminal to see it having taken effect immediately (if you ...

Re: A Newbie" How to use the terminal for Dummies" recommendation:-)

There's a Command Line course on https://linuxjourney.com/ that may be right up your alley. Started the course and am really enjoying it so thanks for the advice. Alongside this, I'm going through the LinuxFoundationX: LFS101x Introduction to Linux https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-linux-linu...

[SOLVED] How to shorten my name in the Terminal [SOLVED]

Hi all, Somewhere in the installation process when filling out my details I must have accepted a pre-filled box I guess? This led to my blurb at the beginning of every command line entry to be quite long. See my image to get the idea https://photos.app.goo.gl/SVikL0uC1LfHUoCy1 I want to use my usern...

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal spits out gobblegook! [SOLVED]

Everyone has had a go at explaining the reasons for the gobbledegook, so, I thought I might as well have a go, too. :D Think of it this way. You have a car - if it rains, what do you do? You turn on the wipers, of course. How do you do that? Somewhere you will find a switch, All cars of the same ma...

Re: Terminal spits out gobblegook!

When I now try to practice the cat command to display the contents of a text file I saved to my documents the output to the terminal is random characters. The problem might be how you're saving the text file - is it from libreoffice, or something similar? You output has mime type "vnd.oasis.opendoc...

[SOLVED}A Newbie" How to use the terminal for Dummies" recommendation:-)[SOLVED}

Hi all, Just wondering does anyone know of a link to a pdf document or youtube video that would help me to learn the basics of the command line/terminal. I'm a complete novice (although I had a brief look at Linux 4-5 years ago) but I enjoy learning, albeit with faltering steps. Preferably it would ...
