no touchscreen support

I have a new "Jumper" brand 2-in-1 tablet and the touchscreen doesn't work. I have Mint 19.3 and Kernel 5.3 lsusb shows this: Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0bda:8153 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Bus 002 Device 002: ID 2109:0813 VIA Labs, Inc. Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bu...

Re: Touchscreen not working

I'm having a similar problem. I have a new 2-in-1 and everything works except the touchscreen. I've looked at lsusb and see an entry for Sigma Micro which I'm guessing is the touch screen controller: 1C4F:007C

Any ideas?

Re: Marco/Metacity memory leak

The maintainers at Metacity have found and fixed the problem. :D

Re: Marco/Metacity memory leak

With excellent assistance from the Gnome maintainers of Metacity (Marco) I have run Valgrind and indeed there is a big leak  They are on the case :D

Re: slowing HDD to HDD data move

I could easily be wrong but I don't think mv has a recursive option so that is why I will try rsync instead, which does. A straight copy using Caja seems to work just fine. I wonder if this issue exists on Cinnamon's Nemo ? I don't have a Cinnamon machine to test it. Perhaps Caja has simply fallen b...

Re: slowing HDD to HDD data move

My experiment with rsync failed and I need to re-run it. What I suspect is that copying in Caja is fast, because I have used that, but that Casa's unlinking is slow when doing a cut and paste move. If I recall, cp --verbose won't show anything. My goal isn't to just move my files but to understand C...

Re: slowing HDD to HDD data move

at 374GB of 380GB only 13 minutes to completion at 6.7MB/sec --- It seems like Zeno's Paradox.

This may not be a "bug" but it is certainly a poor choice of algorithm.

I'm now trying rsync -r --remove-source-files on the same data on the same machine.

Re: slowing HDD to HDD data move

The results are in. This is with an i9-9900K and a pair of HDDs connected with SATA. I ran a Caja file copy of ~380GB and things performed normally and fast. I was beginning to feel this issue was related to the platform. I repeated the experiment with a Caja move (cut-and-paste) and the results are...

Re: slowing HDD to HDD data move

GUI overhead should be negligible, moreover it doesn't explain gradual slowing of the data rate. My guess is that Caja has some kind of linked list that it is traversing.

Re: slowing HDD to HDD data move

I ran the extended SMART test on both source and destination HDDs and both are OK. :) Running SMART on a 3TB HDD is not quick! I'm not inclined to rerun the very same 70GB move on the same hardware but I shall try a much bigger Casa copy on another machine SATA to SATA. I suspect I will see the same...

Re: slowing HDD to HDD data move

I am checking the SMART status of both drives, though it doesn't explain why cp -r was so fast and Caja so slow and that it got slower.

Re: slowing HDD to HDD data move

Both drives use SATA. I don't consider 70GB BIG nowadays. I resorted to cp -r and things are MUCH faster, though I don't have timings to prove it. Overall the machine is entirely responsive and nothing untoward appears in the system monitor.

slowing HDD to HDD data move

I'm moving ~70GB of data from one HDD to another using Caja on Mint 19.1. The transfer rate slows down as the move proceeds. It started out around 14MB/sec and half way through has fallen to 6MB/sec. The forecast completion time gets longer and longer! What gives? Should I have not used Caja ...

SOLVED Marco/Metacity memory leak

I'm seeing a very large memory leak from Marco/Metacity. I'm running Mint 19.1 and Marco. In one instance Marco is using 997MB however, if I temporarily switch to Metacity and then switch back, Marco uses just 35.9MB -- evidence of a leak. My on-line searches reveal that this leak has been r...

Re: incompatibility of curl3 and curl4

Thank you. The link you posted describes a straightforward workaround that doesn't involve re-installation. The situation remains a mess. Indeed, it has nothing to do with the Desktop, it is a fundamental Distro' or Curl issue. I'm not qualified to take sides. It is the first time I have encountered...

incompatibility of curl3 and curl4

I gather that curl3 and curl4 are incompatible with one and another and you can't have them both installed at the same time. Applications can have dependencies on either and the only work around seems to be to install one or other libraries and switch back as needed. It's a mess. The Curl folks seem...

[SOLVED] Re: Nvidia RTX2070 installation

Thank you. I'm up and running. :D There were some unintelligible messages from the driver installer concerning 32 bit compatibility and paths to egl. I can't recall how I answered them but I blithely went ahead. The BIOS has options for CSM but also an option for some kind of Windows specific setup....

[SOLVED] Nvidia RTX2070 installation

It's the same old story, I'm afraid. I'm starting up a new workstation with Mint 19.1 with an Nvidia RTX2070. The RTX2070 isn't that new but things are not going well. I had the usual trouble with earlier Nvidia drivers for the GTX960 so I figured I was experienced: Drop to a basic terminal; disable...
