had the same issue, right click audio icon in panel, had to turned off onboard audio under Hardware and set up HDMI "digital Stereo hdmi output"

using kernel 5.0.0-31

I was playing around testing something with Disks and not thinking, put two / mount points, one on each another drive's partition, one existing for current system, the other / for old 17.3 system. The Disks utility will image a partition, so that's a good place to start. It's already included with Mint. Now for backups. waiting would mean , well waiting more for 19.2 to be released, more testing, so no reason to wait. Besides the ability to install it from the 'Update Manager' is not that time consuming.
